Subject | CHC2021 Save Our Boats |
Comment | I am one among many fishermen and CA resident that disapproves of these measures. I, like everyone else, am all for environmental regulations that save our oceans. I am pleased that our bluefin tuna populations survived the mass slaughter of the 50s, and that I am alive to experience their return this last year. I volunteered as an angler for the CCFRP research in the California Marine Protected areas, and witnessed the impact of humans on the environment, and the benefits of MPAs. This does not mean, however, that we should start flinging regulations left and right that are not economically feasible. These passenger boat regulations have the potential to cause insurmountable economic disaster by killing the CA sport fishing industry for good. 80% of sportfishing boats are based on fiberglass and wood, and cannot be expected to be replaced in such a small time frame, especially given material shortages and price increases. The price of these boats go up to $1 million, and, due to supply shortages, inflation, and mass employee walk-offs, replacing entire boats is not at all affordable by any just means. We already saw a large push to oust Newsom from office and replace him with a republican executive. If mistakes such as these continue to be made, and damage the fabric of the CA economy, we will likely see political repercussions like this, due to immense dissatisfaction with the management of the Golden state. I urge all board members to reconsider before pushing these regulations. Please consult with any specialists before pursuing these solutions, as any capable macroeconomists would scoff at the idea of such an ill considered proposal being passed. - A concerned citizen |
