Comment | From what I have learned about the proposed regulations, many established sportfishing operations will be forced out of business. The New Lo-An, owned and operated by captain, Markus Medak, is one of those sportboats. Captain Medak was recently in the news for helping to save the lives of 25 people in a panga about one-hundred miles off the coast of San Diego. These are good people. My family and I learned to love the sport of ocean fishing on the San Diego fleet over the last fifteen years. In the course of doing so, we have spent a lot of money in the economy and witnessed people traveling from many other states to partake in this exciting sport and spend money in the California economy. This sport not only often results in putting food on the table for families, but it also teaches respect for the ocean and coastal habitat that is so important to California's economy overall. While the effort to transition to alternative and more eco-friendly fuels/motors is admirable, there must be another way of doing so. As proposed, California sportfishing and whale watching boats are unfairly discriminated against. If California truly insists that boats be modified as in the proposal, then California should be prepared to appropriately compensate each boat owner to enable them to do so . . . without putting them out of business. We need sportfishing and whale watching boats to stay in business and continue to contribute to our society in the many positive ways that they currently do. Thank you, Lisa Griffith |
