Comment | To Whom It May Concern: As a lifelong resident of California, I find it necessary to voice my opinion on the proposed legislation requiring dramatic upgrades in the sportfishing fleet in California. The requirements place undo financial pressure on sport boat owners that are already under tremendous strain from COVID and the current economic state of the country. Aside from the sportfishing industry, this legislation hurts the state in other ways. Perhaps fishing isn't that glamorous or popular, but for some it is a vital part of what makes California great. Restricting access to coastal waters through the proposed legislation does a great disservice to our great state with highly questionable environmental benefits. Climate change is real. It is perhaps the most important problem that our generation needs to address. But, the fight to address climate change still has bigger targets than mom and pop owners of sportboats. The major global polluters contributing to climate change are the giant cargo ships that unload at our ports every day. We have massive wildfires every year yet we do not reduce the fuel in the forests with controlled burns. Let's do our part to address climate change, but let's do it in a way that doesn't destroy what makes California great, family businesses and open access to this beautiful state's natural resources. Sincerely, Albert Shin |
