Having fished since the age of three and now I am about to be 70 I
can tell you that imposing this law on small sport fishing boats
will devastate my community of fisherman in California. Many of the
older boats that are still in service cannot afford the overhauls
or replacements of engines this law require. This law will wipe out
most of these boats that are still functional and whose engines
will still work for many years. I understand why and the intention
of this proposed law but it is not realistic that these boats can
be able to make these changes without either going completely out
of business or costing them so much money they will have to sky
rocket their fares. Many fisherman are retired and raising fees
will be prohibitive to many of us on fixed incomes. Why not require
that when these boats need to install a new engine it must use the
required engine under the new law? That would be the time to do it
or retire the boat? That seems sensible and fair. Please consider
the effect this law will have on our fisherman and boats.
