Comment | The need for addressing climate change is more compelling than ever. The need to address air pollution is a continuing endeavor that must be sustained. However, the cure must not be worse than the disease. As I understand the proposed regulation changes to the ocean-going vessels, it seems that many severe financial impacts will occur that will affect a broad swath of industries associated with fishing and boating. Putting such draconian measures into place will likely cripple the fishing industry for years to come. This will put many people out of work including not only commercial and sport fishing boat crews but the ancillary businesses that support them. The boat manufacturing business will also be heavily impacted with similar results. Lastly, let us not forget that each of these industries and all the people working within these industries provide tax revenues for the state, counties, and cities. Each of the individuals share your goal to solve the crises before us. Work with them, they may have solutions that can be implemented more readily and will lessen the burden of the implementation of the changes instituted to combat pollution and climate change. Take advantage of low hanging fruit, put into place changes that are simple cheap and effective now and work with the industries to quickly develop more substantial changes in the future. For the last nine months I have been recovering from an injury that has kept me from being able to go fishing. I was looking forward to catching some tuna out of the H&M Landing fleet in San Diego, but the injury prevented me from that. Now, I am looking forward to going out fishing out of Marina Del Rey on a boat named the Betty-O. I plan on going out on October 23, 2021, and I intend to listen to the USC Notre Dame football game on the radio just like I did when I was 15 years old, 50 years ago. Let's keep the boating and fishing industry alive so we can all create memories to look back on. Sincerely Mark Duran |
