Subject: Support for Voluntary Vessel Speed Reduction Initiative

Hello, 

I am writing you to let you know that I support the “Voluntary
Vessel Speed Reduction Initiative” for pollution reduction and
whale protection benefits and asking that it be implemented and
supported fully. 


The coast of California right off Los Angeles and Santa Barbara is
home to a diversity of important whale species, including the
colossal Blue Whale, and as things stand they are currently under
great threat of death as ships speed through their feeding grounds.
I am writing to support a plan that protects whales and respects
shipping, as well. 


The District suggests using AB 32 auction funds to achieve
voluntary ship speed reduction off the coast of California. And,
organizations as diverse as Maersk shipping lines and Environmental
Defense Fund SUPPORT this initiative. This is a great opportunity
for us to save the lives of the whales that live here in our
community as well as to reduce the emissions of a range of noxious
pollutants and greenhouse gases as well as dramatically reducing
the lethality of ship strikes on whales.
