Subject | Support the adoption of Proposed Regulation for In Use Off Road Diesel Vehicles |
Comment | On May 24, when you vote on the new rule to reduce air pollution from California's construction equipment, you will be deciding if California can lead the nation, as this rule is the first of its kind in the nation, and it could not come at a better time. Construction equipment is a major source of diesel pollution in the state, producing many tons of particulate matter smog-forming Nitrogen Oxides. Children are especially vulnerable to the damage caused by particulate matter and Nitrogen Oxides, because their lungs are still developing. Respiratory health and the damage to it, caused by particulate matter and Nitrogen Oxides, results in tens of thousands of premature deaths in the U.S. from heart and lung disease annually. Particulate matter and smog-forming Nitrogen Oxides needlessly increase hospital admissions, emergency room visits, absences from school and decreased productivity from workers who are harmed. This new rule will prevent as many as 4,000 premature deaths, many of them children’s daeths and save $18 to $26 billion in health care spending. This rule will help clean up some of the most polluted air in the country and the most polluted areas of the state, the Los Angeles/Long Beach air basin and the San Joaquin Valley.By 2020, it will prevent 48 tons per day of Nitrogen Oxides and 5 tons per day of particulate air pollution from entering our air. |
