To the California Air Resources Board:

I recently received an email from the American Lung Association
that allows you to input your zip code and find out how polluted
the air that I, my family, and neighbors breathe in our
community.

Here are the results when I typed in 90212:

2007 LOS ANGELES County State of the Air Report
HIGH OZONE DAYS
Ozone Grade: F
Weighted Average: 80.8
Orange Ozone Days: 158
Red Ozone Days:35
Purple Ozone Days:16

PARTICLE POLLUTION - 24 Hour
Grade: F
Weighted Average: 49.7
Orange Particle Days: 128
Red Particle Days:14
Purple Particle Days: 0

PARTICLE POLLUTION - Annual
Grade: FAIL
Design Value 19.7

GROUPS AT RISK
Pediatric Asthma:	243,813
Adult Asthma:	519,004
Chronic Bronchitis:	288,953
Emphysema:	114,234
Cardiovascular Disease:	2,074,467
Diabetes:	498,089

Total Population:	9,935,475
Population Under 18:	2,739,469
Population 65 & Over:	998,963

To say the very least, I was alarmed and horrified by the
results.

This is why I am taking the time to encourage you, implore you on
May 24, 2007 to please support the proposed regulation for "In-Use
Off-Road Diesel Vehicles."

-- Construction equipment is the second largest source of diesel
pollution in the state, accounting for 20% of particulate
matter(soot) and 16% of smog-forming Nitrogen Oxides (NOx). These
pollutants are two of the biggest pollution hazards for public
health in California and throughout the country.

-- Exposure to smog can have serious effects on respiratory
health. Inflammation and irritation of the respiratory tract can
cause shortness of breath, throat irritation, chest pains and
coughing, and lead to asthma attacks, hospital admissions and
emergency room visits.

-- Particulate air pollution or soot can be inhaled and reach deep
into the lungs. These tiny particulates can enter the circulatory
system and damage blood vessels. Particulate pollution is
associated with heart attacks, irregular heartbeat, asthma
attacks, reduced lung function and bronchitis.

This new rule will:

-- Prevent 4,000 premature deaths;

-- Result in health benefits and reduced health care and hospital
visits of $18 to $26 billion;

-- Help bring the most polluted areas of the state, the Los
Angeles/Long Beach air basin and the San Joaquin Valley, into
attainment with federal air quality standards; and

-- By 2020, prevent 48 tons per day of NOx and 5 tons per day of
particulate air pollution from entering our air.

Again, on May 24, 2007, please support the proposed regulation for
"In-Use Off-Road Diesel Vehicles."

Sincerely,

Cristina Colissimo
