Subject | I support regulating construction-vehicle emissions |
Comment | As someone who works in the design and construction industry, I am writing in support of stronger regulations on emissions from construction equipment. I recently read that you will vote on this issue on May 24. The soot and smog-forming nitrogen oxides from these vehicles add substantially to our state's air pollution, and thereby endanger the health of Californians. Keeping adults and children safe from respiratory problems should be a top concern for the ARB. Construction should not have to involve pollution-spewing equipment. For example, I work in a landscape architecture firm, where I design parks and gardens. I believe that this work is generally good for society, but I know that today's methods of construction cause harm to a job site before my project can improve it. Some people will argue that tighter standards on emissions will raise the cost of construction and cost jobs, but they will be looking at only part of the picture. The savings in health-care (around $20 billion, in an estimate I read), fewer illnesses, fewer missed workdays, fewer premature deaths, and other ecological benefits will be worth more. California is known for leading the nation in protecting our citizens' health and environment -- a track record to be proud of. Please continue our state's leadership on worthy causes like this one. Thank you for allowing me to comment. |
