California can once again be a leader for other states in reducing
diesel pollution. Construction equipment is the second largest
source of diesel pollution in the state of California. Exposure to
smog and soot from diesel fuel can have serious effect on
respiratory health. These health impacts result in tens of
thousands of premature deaths in the U.S from heart and lung
disease annually, and place an unnecessary strain on our medical
services. Children are especially vulnerable because their lungs
are still developing.
Here at Lake Tahoe where I live we passed a ban on two stroke
engine water crafts on the lake. Many protest the change
initially, but after the law was passed, everyone adjusted.
Businesses that rent water crafts purchased new jet skies or boats
and now the lake is cleaner and everyone has adjusted.
The same will be true when you try to pass this reduction of
construction equipment pollution. You will hear arguments that it
is too restrictive or requires change too fast. But, in the end,
everyone will adjust when you pass your changes. And California
will have cleaner air. And we can continue to lead the way in
helping to fight global warming.
Thank you for hearing my opinion.
