East Oakland, especially deep East Oakland has continued to suffer
from zoning that allows grandfathered industry, like the AB&I
Foundry and the huge Crematorium to continue to operate. These
polluting industries are close to and downwind from residential
areas as well as schools and school playgrounds. The standards that
have allowed these grandfathered and permitted polluting industries
to continue operating are not realistic! The "allowable levels" of
pollution don't exist in a vacuum. Their pollution combines with
the fumes off the 880 freeway and the idling trucks that go through
the neighborhoods. These conditions would never be tolerated in the
Oakland hills. These are areas that historically have been redlined
and reserved for people of color. These are neighborhoods that are
economically disadvantaged. Add the smoke pollution from the
wildfires and covid to this mix and we have a totally disastrous
situation. Permitting standards need to be changed immediately and
these polluters need to be shut down now, not in 2-10 years. at the
very least Spare the Air days must include shutting down these
polluters for the duration of the alerts. Thank you
