Dear California Air Resources Board,
As a native Californian, I understand firsthand how much our
state has changed over the 30+ years I've lived here. As a City
employee, I know how much we must mobilize to prevent the worst
effects of climate change, while also mitigating its current and
inevitable impacts. As a public health student, I am acutely aware
of how wildfire smoke results in increased heart attacks and
strokes; how our most vulnerable have perished in the heat,
sometimes in the street; and how the health and livelihoods of
whole communities rely on adequate snow pack and river levels. Most
importantly, as a human being, I believe that we deserve clean air
and future beyond oil and gas. We deserve clean transportation
options that work for all of our communities.
I am calling on you to include the following as priorities in
the 2022 Climate Change Scoping Plan:
1. A full, coordinated phase out of fossil fuels, with targets
for oil refining by 2045, oil and gas extraction by 2035, and a
clean electric grid by 2035.
2. Accelerate and scale up investments in clean vehicles and
mass transit for working class Californians.
3. Eliminate reliance on climate policy dead ends like Carbon
Capture and Storage on polluting fuel sources.
We are relying on you all to pave the way towards a resilient,
equitable future. California can and should be a leader in this -
we can't afford any other option.
Thank you for the opportunity to comment.
