My name is Mary L. Williams and I am a pediatric dermatologist
on the faculty of the University of California San Francisco.
I am writing to urge you not to adopt the proposed CARB Scoping
Plan, which is grossly inadequate to address the looming public
health crisis of climate change. The science is clear, we have a
terrifying short time to stop burning fossil fuels - its imperative
that we do not continue to invest in fossil fuel
infrastructures. Yet, the Draft Scoping Plan calls for
increasing gas-fired power generation by 10 gigawatts, and relies
on unproves technologies for emission reductions. This is a
step backwards. The fossil fuel industry wants billions of
our tax dollars to subsidize risky technologies that will allow
them to continue to pollute. The human costs of air pollution
are immense - it damages the developing brains of our babies,
triggers asthma and eczema in children and adults, and increases
cardiac deaths in our seniors, to name just a few of the
consequences of pollution from fossil fuel combustion. The CALGEM
Scientific Advisory Panel has clearly stated that the most
effective way to protect the public's health is to stop production
of new wells and phase out all of the existing oil and gas
infrastructure. For the sake of current and future
generations of Californians, I urge you to reject the proposed
Scoping Plan. Thank you.
