To the California Air
Resources Board:
I am a California
resident living in San Francisco. As you are well aware, our state
is still chocking in air pollution, and as this fire season
approaches, the western United States has already seen record
burns. Once again, we face the prospect of a twin disaster: power
shutoffs and wildfires, leading to toxic air
pollution and widespread destruction.
California needs
to scale up investment in zero-emission and mass transportation
options that work for our communities. Clean cars, clean trucks and
transit must be accessible and affordable to working-class
Californians. I call on CARB to:
- Roll out a full,
coordinated phase out of fossil fuels, with targets for
oil refining by 2045, oil and gas extraction by 2035, and a clean
electric grid by 2035.
- Accelerate and scale
up investments in clean cars, trucks, and mass
transit for working class Californians across the
state. In particular, if we hope to scale up electric vehicles, we
must invest much more in widespread charging infrastructure,
including at multi-family dwellings.
- Eliminate reliance
on climate policy dead ends like Carbon
Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS) on polluting fuel
sources.
Thank you,
Atid Kimelman
