Hello, my
name is Anthony Singh-Reynoso. I am a resident of Oxnard, CA, and a
young adult leader with the nonprofit CAUSE. I’m here to
speak on the CARB Scoping Plan. I traveled here from my community
(attended the CARB meeting as a group of 15 from CAUSE from Oxnard
which is 400 miles away but were all not called on to comment in
time) to demand that CARB commit to a more ambitious plan to stop
the environmental injustices in our state.
CARB wants
to keep using fossil fuels and recommends Alternative 3.
Alternative 3 includes an additional 10GW buildout that will
disproportionately impact EJ communities like Oxnard, burdening us
with more environmental injustices. Our lungs are tired of being
surrounded by oil wells, power plants, ports, and superfund sites
still left unclean. We are being placed in sacrifice zones so
fossil fuel profits can grow at the cost of our community’s
health and well-being. That is especially troublesome as we
continue to navigate the COVID-19 pandemic. Environmental
injustices will continue to be perpetuated under Alternative 3 of
the CARB Scoping Plan, continuing to create underlying health
conditions that leave us more vulnerable to this
pandemic.
In the CARB
Scoping Plan, I am demanding the board make a plan for
transitioning to clean, renewable, zero-emission energy by 2035
with the retirement of all gas plants currently in operation and no
new gas plants built. That means stopping all of the new gas plants
proposed in the alternatives. I am also demanding that the board
make a plan for more clean cars, trucks, and mass transit for
working-class Californians. We must transition to 100%
zero-emission vehicles by 2035 and lower the number of vehicle
miles traveled by 30% by 2035.
