The Scoping Plan must lay a path for moving more rapidly to
renewable energy and zero emissions. Selecting the Alternative 3
pathway means continuing investments in natural gas (aka methane, a
highly damaging climate pollutant) which do not make sense as our
climate crisis worsens. It is the opposite of the policy I am
pursuing as an individual; financing over a number of years the
capability to finally go off gas and fully electrify my home by
2023 or at latest 2024. My action contrasts with CARB's Alternative
3 recommendation that gas appliances continue to be used until
their end of life. This approach prolongs the use of gas and its
infrastructure. I am fortunate to be able to afford replacing my
appliances. Other Californians should be assisted to do likewise
through aggressive regulatory and incentive programs. Otherwise, we
as a state will be committed to gas, and its harmful health and
climate effects, for decades more, into the second half of the 21st
centry. For CARB to continue to rely on, and actually encourage,
fossil fuel infrastructure makes it increasingly difficult to
ultimately move beyond it.
Finally, please do focus on
ending our dependency on oil and gas and not encouraging their
continued existence through such technologies as carbon capture and
storage.
Thank you.
