I write as a family physician, a public health professional and
a committed and longtime environmentalist. Although I do not
live in California, I am deeply concerned about the flaws in the
Scoping Plan. Your state has a very major impact on
pro-environmental action throughout the country and thereby a major
impact on the environmental wellbeing of this country and this
planet.
The most recent reports from the IPCC emphasize that the problem
of human caused global warming is not just getting steadily worse,
but also it is exponentially worse every time they report. We
absolutely cannot afford to pussyfoot on this problem, doing some
things that will help the problem and some things that will worsen
it terribly. The Scoping Plan as proposed has some VERY MAJOR
flaws.
I urge you to make the following changes in the Plan:
- Re-evaluate your designation of ethanol as a renewable
fuel - it is just a laughable and easily disproven thesis that
ethanol is a "good" fuel
- Re-evaluate your determination that Blue hydrogen
(made from fossil fuels) is a pathway to decarbonization.
- Eliminate Carbon Capture and Sequestration (CCS) and
Direct Air Capture as strategies to reduce carbon
emissions
California has been frequently lauded as a forward thinking
state that puts good science before the interests of the fossil
fuel industry and its cohorts. You need to stop going from
climate hero to climate villain and start doing what is right for
all of us, not just the vested interests of a few.
Thank you for your consideration.
