Subject | Reduce emissions, don't paper them over with tropical forest offsets |
Comment | I write to oppose the California Tropical Forest Standard. I strongly support rain forest preservation and reforestation as part of the solution to rising carbon emissions. However, these goals should be part of the baseline, not traded off against slower emissions reductions. In addition, as recent news on the fires in the Brazilian rain forest have underlined, rain forest preservation is difficult to monitor and enforce, and offsets like those proposed have proven easy to "game". It will not be easy to reduce emissions to the necessary extent, but we need to do the hard work, not settle for misleading alternatives. |
