As a native Californian, I appreciate all that my beloved state is doing to alleviate the climate crisis, and I thank you for your wide-ranging inquiry as you consider options for investing in carbon-reducing strategies and actions. Agriculture is not often looked at in these terms, but organic farming, composting and healthy soils can add significantly to a program's overall carbon reduction goals. By embracing sustainable farm practices such as planting cover crops, increasing the creation and use of compost and mulch, reducing the use of pesticides and herbicides, farmers can create remarkably effective carbon sinks in their living soils. Besides sequestering carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gasses, healthy soils can also reduce farm run-off and improve air and water quality. It is important to note also that continuing to engage in existing industrial-style agricultural practices will only hasten global warming. By working with natural systems, we solve the problem from both ends, reducing the emissions traditionally caused by one practice, while increasing sequestration with another. We hope that you will support the Healthy Soils program as a vital part of your carbon reduction efforts. Thank you for your time and consideration.
