Subject: Aliso Canyon Should Be Closed
Comment:
The Aliso Canyon facility should be closed, because the Health & Safety risks associated with the facility outweigh the benefits derived from the facility. Based on the historical usage of the facility, I do not believe Aliso Canyon is essential for taking care of the energy needs of Southern California residents. A few months ago, the LA Times wrote an article, which question whether SoCal Gas actually needed to use the Aliso Canyon field based on the 10 year usage history of the field. Beyond the LA Times, you can reach out to Food & Water Watch as well as the Porter Ranch Neighborhood Council for additional information. In short, I believe SoCal Gas/Sempra's desire to keep Aliso Canyon open is based on their desire to buy natural gas cheaply, store it at Aliso Canyon, and then sell it when the price is higher. The Health and Safety of Porter Ranch residents should be valued more highly than SoCal Gas/Sempra's desire to make a profit by trading natural gas. Other Comments: 1) I am pleased with the long-term health study. 2) I believe an improvement on the settlement would be for SoCal Gas to make donations to Castlebay Elementary School and Porter Ranch Community School. I think a donation/allocation of settlement funds is appropriate, because both of these schools needed to be relocated during the gas leak/blow-out. In short, some of the settlement funds should be allocated to local elementary schools, since it helps the kids, who are/were directly impacted by the gas leak, as opposed to more distant projects in areas that weren't impacted by the gas leak. 3) Many residents in the Porter Ranch area have developed health problems that they believe were caused by the gas leak. 4) It is hard for me to believe that the ancient infrastructure (60 year old pipes) that are stressed when gas is pumped in and out are actually safe. For example, SoCal Gas had to close 2/3 of the re-opened pipes that were allegedly considered safe. To me, Aliso is a ticking time bomb. The Health and Safety of Porter Ranch residents should not be sacrificed in favor of SoCal Gas' interests.
