Subject: Consideration of California Climate Investment allocation to public schools
Comment:
Dear California Air Resources Board, As someone who founded a garden-based education program (Living Classroom) that utilizes green schoolyards with native and edible gardens and other outdoor learning environments, I highly encourage you to encourage and allow public schools in the CA Climate Investment designated areas to apply for funds to transform their school grounds and buildings to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and conserve energy, use renewable energy, plant trees to provide shade, cool buildings and reduce the heat island effect, conserve water, retain and purify storm water runoff, and otherwise provide superior learning environments for our children. My understanding is that there are some funds from other categories available for schools including urban forestry and alternative fuels for school buses, but in order to have a much greater impact, it's important to make it easy for school districts to apply for funds to cover a broad range of greenhouse gas reducing schoolyard and building improvements through one application. If you are able to provide such a streamlined process for the CA Climate Investment portion of the funds as well as for other areas, it will make a big difference in terms of the number of school districts able to apply for the greening of their schools. I am happy to share my thoughts further with you as well as introduce you to some wonderful organizations around the State that would love to be able to find the funds to create green schoolyards and would partner with school districts to do it. Thank you, Vicki Moore Founder Living Classroom vickim@livingclassroom.org 650-224-8274
