Subject: scenarios need better definitions
Comment:
There are too many undefined terms in the NWL Scenarios for citizens to understand. This is the first set of scoping scenarios which is so opaque. I'm no expert but am fairly well informed and I don't know which measures/practices are included in the terms below. They may have been agreed upon behind the scenes by major stakeholders, but they are not clear to members of the public, like myself, who want to participate. Please post more specific descriptions of the measures/practices listed below and reset the comment period to start when the definitions are posted. "sustainable harvesting" "heterogeneous harvesting" (different from "no clearcuts"? "increased (type of) harvesting" net increase in harvest or change in harvest method with no increase in net harvest? "ag practices with the co-benefit of increased drought resilience" "nutrient cycling with a focus on woody biomass soil incorporation (almond trees or also slash?) and composting for both carbon and agronomic benefits" "climate smart practices focused on drought resilience" "climate smart practices focused on biodiversity" "protect WUI" vs "maximum defensible space" vs "defensible scientifically recommended defensible space" More comments to follow once I understand what is in the scenarios. Also, I live in Humboldt County, which, in addition to forests, has 600,500 acres of pasture and range land with great potential for carbon sequestration. Simply categorizing our region as forest will miss out on the opportunity to sequester carbon and increase drought resilience on those working lands. Thank you. Wendy Ring MD, MPH
