Subject: wetland restoration and GHG emissions
Comment:
Notwithstanding the huge co-benefits of wetland restoration and
land use change to wetlands, the benefits towards reduction of GHG
emissions are minimal, and in fact GHG emissions through wetland
conversion could increase. Anaerobic conditions such as occur in
wetlands cause microbial production of methane gas, which is about
25 times more potent as a GHG than CO2. In many cases the
beneficial buildup of carbon is countered by increased methane gas
emissions.

Therefore, I would like to reinforce the notion that climate
science is still a young science, and many aspects of it such as
impacts, mitigation and adaptation to increasing temperatures and
changing weather patterns are not all well understood. Hence, my
comment, to ensure that policy decisions on reducing GHG emissions
through Natural and Working Landscapes continue to be based on the
latest science using California research activities.
