We write to support continued investment in climate research with
proceeds from California's Cap-and-Trade program. As scientists and
engineers working in climate and clean energy-related fields, we
see daily the important work that is enabled by such investments.
We have been drawn to California for PhD research and renewable
energy entrepreneurship because of the state's leadership in
studying and confronting climate change.

There is continued need to address gaps in research funding, such
as for climate adaptation and resiliency. California is not only
home to world-leading scientists, but to many groups who will
experience a range of consequences of climate change including
drought, coastal flooding, and wildfire. We appreciate CCI's
statement that "California is committed to supporting research on
climate change mitigation, adaptation, and resiliency" as well as
the $32M commitment to climate research conducted by the SGC and
CDFA. We write in support of these portions of the CCI Investment
Plan and would encourage CARB to consider additional funding
allocations to CA-based research opportunities in the future.
