The most cost-effective approach is to replace livestock farming with crop farming. Meat is not essential for us to maintain health. In fact, a plant-based diet is healthier. Each of the nutrients from meat are attainable from crops. The livestock industry has a much higher environmental impact than raising crops. It requires ten to 20 times more water than crop farming, per pound produced. It requires ten times more land than crops to produce the same amount of nuitrients. It requires more than ten times more deforestation per calorie produced. Raising livestock presents risks of zoonotic infections, e.g., COVID 19. The kind of crop farming that has the lowest environmental impact is no-till organic agroecology. Combustion-powered farm equipment should be replaced with electric equipment. This approach to raising our food supply is the most sustainable. It does not require energy-intensive equipment to capture and store GHGs, e.g., methane. During a pandemic, severe recession, and accelerating climate change, it is best to conserve our clean natural resources and minimize sources of GHGs. |
