To whom this may concern: I am a scientist living, researching and publishing on the ecology of southern California natural and urban landscapes for 50+ years. Please read below for my opinion, including that the use of bull dozers on wildfires in natural areas should always be the last resort, both from the perspective of protecting our fire fighters and protection of natural resources. The California Air Resource Board (CARB) has drafted "scenarios" to manage California's farm, ranch, and natural landscapes for carbon sequestration, wildfire, and climate change. But it has grievously botched the process by lumping together in a single category vastly different conifer forests and coastal sage scrub and chaparral. Our shrublands differ completely from forests. If not corrected, the scenarios will support CalFire's plan for massive vegetation removal and prescribed burning, which will cause the rich native habitat to convert to flammable weeds without public safety benefit. Thank you for your kind consideration of my experienced position on this subject. Peter H. Bloom PhD |
