The 2010 emission standards for heavy-duty engines have
established a limit for oxides of nitrogen (NOX) emissions of
0.20 g/bhp-hr, a 90% reduction from the previous emission
standards. However, it is projected that even when the entire
on-road fleet of heavy-duty vehicles operating in California is
compliant with the 2010 NOX emission standards, the upcoming
National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS) requirements for
ambient particulate matter and ozone will not be achieved in
California without further significant reduction in NOX emissions
from the heavy-duty vehicles.

CAP AND TRADE

A new proposal on California's cap-and-trade program emerges as
vote is delayed. A coalition of business-friendly Democrats is
detailing their own ideas for cap and trade, a centerpiece of
California's fight against global warming, the latest bid in a
crowded field of efforts to extend the program. Cap and trade
requires polluting companies to buy permits to release greenhouse
gas emissions, and lawmakers…

Amid Trump Cuts, California Proposes Its Own Energy Moonshot. A
pending cap-and-trade bill would earmark hundreds of millions of
dollars for clean energy research, as the White House takes aim
at federal funding. An ambitious California cap-and-trade
proposal would earmark hundreds of millions of dollars annually
for an energy research and development fund…

CLIMATE CHANGE

New York, California Governors Form Climate Change Alliance. The
governors of New York, California and Washington State formed a
coalition to fight global warming in response to President Donald
Trump’s decision to pull the U.S. out of the Paris climate
accord. The United States Climate Alliance will push to cut
greenhouse gases and lead a state-level initiative to support the
global agreement that the president has derided as harmful to
U.S. interests…

‘Climate Change Is Real’: Many U.S. Companies Regret Paris Accord
Exit. Soon after President Trump announced that the United States
would back out of the Paris climate accord, several large
companies based in the United States that had supported the
international pact said they were disappointed by the decision
and would continue their environmental efforts.

China is getting serious about fighting climate change at home.
Abroad, its investments tell a different story. Pakistan’s Thar
region is a swath of desert in the country’s south long
associated with poverty, drought, famine — and coal. Now, with
some help from China, it could soon power the country. China has
signed billions of dollars in agreements with Pakistan to help
the country alleviate its chronic energy shortages, primarily by
burning coal.

Elon Musk quits Trump advisory councils, saying, 'Climate change
is real'. Elon Musk said he was resigning from two White House
advisory councils after President Trump announced Thursday that
he is withdrawing the United States from the Paris climate
accord. Other pillars of corporate America — including Google’s
chief executive and Amazon.com — also joined a growing chorus of
disapproval over Trump’s decision.

How pulling out of the Paris climate change agreement may hurt
the US military. The U.S. government is turning its back on one
of the most significant international climate change accords in
modern history — and it’s only going to end up hurting the
Department of Defense. President Donald Trump absolutely plans on
withdrawing the U.S. from the Paris Agreement…

What you need to know about the science of climate change. The
president's announcement that the U.S. has pulled out of the
Paris climate accord has renewed interest in the nearly
two-year-old agreement. The way I see it – regardless of the
final decision – anything that shines a spotlight on this
important agreement is a gift.
To understand why the Paris Agreement is important step in
fighting global warming, you first need to understand the facts
of climate change.

Governor Brown Looks Abroad For Climate Change Allies. Looking
for allies in the fight against climate change, California Gov.
Jerry Brown heads to China this week in a push to build foreign
support for carbon-cutting efforts that have found resistance in
Washington. California will work with governments around the
world to combat climate change even if President Donald Trump
rolls back environmental regulations…

5 Changes That Could Come From Leaving The Paris Climate Deal.
President Trump announced Thursday that the U.S. will leave the
Paris climate deal. Here are five things that could be affected
by the decision. 1. The coal industry Even coal companies had
lobbied the Trump administration to stay in the agreement. They
said they needed a seat at the table during international climate
discussions to advocate for coal's place in the global energy
mix.

Utilities company offers $1,200 for purchasing electric cars. The
electric utility for Vermont’s largest city is offering to help
customers upgrade to electric cars, contributing $1,200 for the
purchase of each new vehicle. Darren Springer, a Burlington
Electric spokesperson, says the program is meant to help reduce
greenhouse gas emissions in the city. WVPS-FM reports
(http://bit.ly/2qDvfTw ) the incentive program only includes
electric-only vehicles — plug-in, hybrid vehicles that run on
both gasoline and electric don’t qualify.

U.S. judge lets investor diesel lawsuit against Daimler proceed.
A federal judge in California will allow a U.S. investor class
action lawsuit against Daimler AG (DAIGn.DE) and several senior
executives to proceed over allegations the company did not
disclose excess emissions. The German automaker faces ongoing
investigations by U.S. and German authorities into excess diesel
emissions. Last month, German prosecutors searched Daimler's
offices as part of an investigation into diesel pollution.

the support of the California Air Resources Board (CARB) and the

GREEN ENERGY

Sempra exec says 100 percent renewables is possible now. A top
official with Sempra Energy, one of the nation’s largest
utilities, made a stunning admission to a roomful of gas and oil
executives this week: there is no impediment to California
getting all of its energy from renewables – now. In simple terms,
this means all power could come from sources like wind, solar and
hydro without reliance on fossil fuels.

OPINIONS

Leaving Paris agreement is a step backward on climate change. Re:
“President Trump will abandon Paris global climate pact,
dismaying allies,” June 1 news story. As an architect, one of my
key goals is designing sustainable buildings for current and
future generations who will live and work in the structures I’ve
created. A sustainable built environment is one of the best
solutions we have to combat the effects of climate change.

Hot Commodity: Late-Model Volkswagen TDIs, New or Used, Are Rare
and Selling for a Bundle. Although Volkswagen has paid dearly for
its mistakes leading up to its diesel-emissions scandal, most
owners of 2.0-liter TDI models have emerged relatively well off,
thanks to the restitution and buyback terms of the $10 billion
settlement program. Volkswagen dealerships haven’t fared too
badly, either, with their $1.2 billion settlement. And now they
appear to be making a bundle selling new…
