However, it is projected that even when the entire on-road fleet of heavy-duty vehicles operating in California is compliant with the 2010 NOX emission standards, the upcoming National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS) requirements for ambient particulate matter and ozone will not be achieved in California without further significant reduction in NOX emissions from the heavy-duty vehicles. https://www.arb.ca.gov/research/seminars/sharp/sharp.htm CAP AND TRADE Ontario's 2nd cap-and-trade auction sells out. Ontario's second cap-and-trade auction sold out of its current allowances this month, bringing the program's total revenue so far to nearly $1 billion. The June auction in the system aimed at lowering greenhouse gas emissions follows the inaugural one in March, which also sold out. Environment Minister Glen Murray said the results show Ontario's carbon market is working and that businesses are engaged in it. https://www.hamiltonnews.com/news-story/7370068-ontario-s-2nd-cap-and-trade-auction-sells-out/ http://kitchener.ctvnews.ca/cap-and-trade-revenue-nears-1-billion-as-second-auction-sells-out-1.3457689 AIR POLLUTION The Heat Wave Sweeping the East Coast Comes With a Side of Smog. Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti and Long Beach Mayor Robert Garcia pledged this week to wean their ports off dirty diesel and other fossil fuels and switch to zero-emission equipment by 2035. This is the most aggressive plan yet to cut air pollution at the ports, by far. And it’s an essential transformation both to clean Los Angeles’ notoriously unhealthy air and to cut the carbon emissions that are fueling climate change. http://www.latimes.com/opinion/editorials/la-ed-cleaner-ports-20170614-story.html Column: Life support for coal will make U.S. an energy backwater.
