The 2010 emission standards for heavy-duty engines have
established a limit for oxides of nitrogen (NOX) emissions of
0.20 g/bhp-hr, a 90% reduction from the previous emission
standards. However, it is projected that even when the entire
on-road fleet of heavy-duty vehicles operating in California is
compliant with the 2010 NOX emission standards, the upcoming
National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS) requirements for
ambient particulate matter and ozone will not be achieved in
California without further significant reduction in NOX emissions
from the heavy-duty vehicles.

CAP AND TRADE

Ontario's 2nd cap-and-trade auction sells out. Ontario's second
cap-and-trade auction sold out of its current allowances this
month, bringing the program's total revenue so far to nearly $1
billion. The June auction in the system aimed at lowering
greenhouse gas emissions follows the inaugural one in March,
which also sold out. Environment Minister Glen Murray said the
results show Ontario's carbon market is working and that
businesses are engaged in it.

AIR POLLUTION

The Heat Wave Sweeping the East Coast Comes With a Side of Smog.
The heat wave that’s gripped the east coast over the past few
days is also making it harder to breathe. The culprit is a
dangerous mix of diesel exhaust, paint fumes and trees, baked by
the heat to create a blanket of ozone. Children, the elderly, and
people with heart conditions or asthma are most at risk.

BMW's Hometown Munich Mulls Diesel Ban to Fight Air Pollution.
BMW AG’s hometown of Munich is considering outlawing older diesel
cars, the latest European city to crack down amid mounting
evidence that the technology’s not that clean after all.
The driving ban was floated after a government study detected
hazardous pollution levels in the Bavarian city’s air…

Nearly 14,000 Companies in China Violate Pollution Rules.
Environmental inspectors in northern China have found that nearly
14,000 companies, or 70 percent of the businesses they examined,
failed to meet environmental standards for controlling air
pollution, according to a state news agency report. The
inspectors working for the Ministry of Environmental Protection

Valero’s Benicia Refinery Outage Triggered ‘Huge’ Release of
Pollution. The Valero refinery in Benicia released more than
74,000 pounds of sulfur dioxide during 14 days of flaring after a
power outage in May, according to a report the company has filed
with state officials. “A huge amount of sulfur dioxide was
emitted,” said Anthony Wexler, director of the Air Quality
Research Center at UC Davis…

Air quality officials crack down on odor-producing manufacturer
in Paramount. South Coast Air Quality Management District
officials want the Carlton Forge Works in Paramount to reduce the
persistent smells emanating from its facility on East Adams

EPA: air pollution rule should be delayed – despite its effect on
children. Environmental Protection Agency acknowledges postponing
Obama administration measure might have ‘disproportionate’ effect

CLIMATE CHANGE

Here’s the latest report card on California’s battle against
climate change. New data released by state regulators provide a
detailed snapshot of California’s battle against global warming.
We’ve crunched the numbers on specific sources of pollution,
including planes, cars and trucks, and how the state’s pollution
compares to the size of its economy. The state has been chipping
away at greenhouse gas emissions in recent years.

Study: Wildfires, Climate Change Could Make Sierra a Polluter.
What if nature were to become a polluter, discharging millions of
tons of planet-warming carbon into the atmosphere in much the
same way as diesel-fueled trucks or coal-fired power plants?
This nature-as-polluter scenario might seem far-fetched, but it’s
well on its way to becoming reality, according to a recent study
co-authored by UC Merced Professor…

Scientists Blame ‘Climate Change’ For Thick Sea Ice That Halted
Arctic Expedition. Scientists who cancelled their Arctic
expedition due to thick ice conditions haves an interesting
excuse for why they had to abandon their research project —
climate change. “We’re doing a large-scale climate change study

conspiring…

U.S. could stay on Green Climate Fund board after all. The Trump
administration might retain the United States' seat on the Green
Climate Fund. White House/YouTube
The United States might not lose its seat on the Green Climate
Fund it has abandoned under President Trump. Trump two weeks ago
in the White House Rose Garden denounced the U.N.-led fund to
help poor countries cope with climate change as a
multibillion-dollar boondoggle.

OPINIONS

In the face of Trump's anti-climate change policies, L.A. and
Long Beach push for greener ports. Los Angeles Mayor Eric
Garcetti and Long Beach Mayor Robert Garcia pledged this week to
wean their ports off dirty diesel and other fossil fuels and
switch to zero-emission equipment by 2035. This is the most
aggressive plan yet to cut air pollution at the ports, by far.
And it’s an essential transformation both to clean Los Angeles’
notoriously unhealthy air and to cut the carbon emissions that
are fueling climate change.

Column: Life support for coal will make U.S. an energy backwater.
In the run-up to World War I, German general Erich Ludendorff was
said to have described his country’s alliance with the decaying
Austro-Hungarian Empire as like being “shackled to a corpse.”
That phrase aptly describes the situation the U.S. will find
itself in if it continues to bet on coal as the fuel of the
future.

Climate change resilience needed. Climate change and the
resultant increase of mean temperature in different parts India

monsoon this year. If the predictions of Indian Meteorological
Department (IMD) are proved right…

G20 summit: A good climate for change. New research has concluded
that human brains rely on long-term and short-term memory as the
basis of constantly evolving scenarios for the future. This
unique ability to contemplate the future usually lifts our
spirits. It is what makes us resilient. It is the reason why we
have survived. It gives us hope.

A One–Two Punch to Tackle China's Air Pollution Problems. New
research shows how climate and air quality policies can work
together to clean up China's air. Air pollution kills an
estimated 4,000 people every day in China, which is why the
country is taking significant measures to clean up the air. At
the same time, China has pledged to support global efforts to
reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Climate change causes killer heatwaves. In southern Asia,
mortality is likely to rise with the thermometer. Researchers
have established a direct link between global warming and
heat-related deaths from killer heatwaves. A tiny rise of 0.5°C
in mean summer temperatures in India or another comparable
tropical developing nation could result in a 146% rise in mass
death from the heat.
