CAP AND TRADE

Governor pushes for cap-and-trade deal as deadline looms. Gov.
Jerry Brown is working with lawmakers, business groups and
environmentalists to reach a deal on extending cap and trade,
California's landmark program aimed at slowing global warming.
Brown wants a consensus before lawmakers start summer recess on
July 21. Reaching a deal this week means the Legislature can vote

AIR POLLUTION

Federal court blocks Trump EPA on air pollution. An appeals court
Monday struck down the Environmental Protection Agency’s 90-day
suspension of new emission standards on oil and gas wells, a
decision that could set back the Trump administration’s broad
legal strategy for rolling back Obama-era rules. In a 2-to-1
ruling, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia
Circuit concluded that the EPA had the right to reconsider a 2016
rule limiting methane…

Oh, say can you see…air pollution on the Fourth of July? The
Fourth of July produces more than bursts of red, white and blue
in the sky. It creates plumes of rancid smoke that can cause
breathing problems. Officials at the San Joaquin Valley Air
Pollution Control District say the central San Joaquin Valley
summer air already is laden with ozone pollution, and fireworks
only add to the toxic mix.

Valero refinery sues PG&E over outage that idled gas making,
spewed pollution. The Valero oil refinery is seeking $75 million
from PG&E in a federal lawsuit that blames the utility for a May
5 power outage that disrupted gasoline production for a month,
damaged equipment, and showered tons of air pollution on downwind
areas. Some Benicia residents have criticized the oil refinery
over pollution from hours of flaring that led to an industrial
park being evacuated and an air quality agency issuing at least
four...

CLIMATE CHANGE

Trump May Find Some Allies on Climate Change at G-20 Meeting.
Western European efforts to isolate President Trump for rejecting
the Paris climate change agreement appear to be faltering as
leaders gather for a summit meeting in Hamburg, Germany, at the
end of the week. The gulf between Mr. Trump’s worldview and that
of most European leaders on topics from trade to immigration will
be on display in the coming days.

A landmark climate lawsuit against Trump is scheduled for trial
next year. Here’s what to expect. A trial date has finally been
set for a groundbreaking, climate-change lawsuit being brought
against the federal government after multiple hurdles in the past
year threatened to prevent it from moving forward. Last week,
U.S. Magistrate Judge Thomas Coffin ordered that the trial begin
Feb. 5, 2018.The order also permitted three fossil fuel industry

Trump administration cuts could stymie climate change research at
UC Irvine. Researchers working on climate-oriented science at UC
Irvine are cutting or scaling back their programs in anticipation
of budget cuts that reflect the Trump administration’s skeptical
views about global warming. The changes are coming as the school,
as well as researchers at other institutions in Southern
California, prepares to receive fewer…

Information is investment power in climate change era. Here's one
way to deal with climate risk: "The fact that anyone is actually
quantifying something like two degrees is laughable in the
extreme." That was Nicholas Limb, chairman of Petroleum Company
FAR, responding to a question at this year's AGM about climate
change and his company's continued exploration in the face of
action to combat climate change.

Dems who killed a carbon bill took $1.2M from industry. A group
of California Democrats who helped kill a key climate proposal
received $1.2 million in campaign contributions from the oil and
gas industry and other opponents of the measure.
Those 17 Democrats are viewed as an important swing bloc as Gov.
Jerry Brown (D) and lawmakers craft another bill that aims to add
10 years to the state's cap-and-trade program for carbon
pollution.

58% believe humans cause warming — poll. Most Americans believe
climate change is caused by human activities, according to a
survey conducted by Yale University's Program on Climate Change
Communication. Seventy percent of Americans believe climate
change is happening, and 58 percent believe it is caused by human
emissions, the highest number since researchers began the
biannual survey in 2008.

FUELS

Climate, poverty woes fuel BLM rule debate in N.M. gas patch.
Desert sand crunches beneath Don Schreiber's boots as he
approaches a gas well on his sprawling ranch in the heart of the
San Juan Basin. The equipment is painted yellow and green to
blend in with the scrub. But there's no hiding the odor of
rotting eggs that wafts across the arid terrain. "Smell that?"
Schreiber asks. Methane itself has no scent…

Methane ruling doesn't signal future court losses for Pruitt.
Environmental groups welcomed a ruling from a federal appeals
court this week overturning part of U.S. EPA's attempts to halt
federal controls on methane emissions from the oil and gas
industry.
The decision, they said, shows that the U.S. Court of Appeals of
the District of Columbia Circuit is being "vigilant" about the
agency following the law.

VEHICLES

Why Sacramento leaders believe curbside vehicle chargers will be
a game-changer. No garage? No problem. That’s what city officials
want Sacramento residents thinking as they consider buying an
electric car without regard for their overnight parking
situation. The city’s first curbside electric vehicle chargers
are set to go up at Southside Park next summer, allowing anyone
to pull into a parking space and plug in.

Volvo: Gas-only cars are history after 2019. The future of cars:
Self-driving and electric Volvo is going all in on the electric
car. The Swedish automaker is slamming on the brakes on vehicles
powered solely by internal combustion engines, announcing that
every car it makes from 2019 onward will have an electric motor.
The move makes Chinese-owned Volvo the first traditional carmaker
to fully embrace electric and hybrid production.

GREEN ENERGY

Utility proceeds with big wind investment in top coal state.
President Donald Trump's efforts to roll back coal and
climate-change regulations aren't discouraging a utility from
making a $3.5 billion investment in wind energy, the bulk of
which will build dozens of new wind turbines in the top
coal-producing state. Rocky Mountain Power is ready to present
its detailed wind plan to regulators in Wyoming…

Trump's alarming environmental rollback: what's been scrapped so
far. Since January, the White House, Congress and EPA have
engineered a dizzying reversal of regulations designed to protect
the environment and public health. Donald Trump’s decision to
withdraw the US from the Paris climate deal may have followed
months of anguished division amongst his closest advisers…

OPINIONS

EPA’s Scott Pruitt is Trump’s most adept and dangerous hatchet
man. Donald Trump is a crude buffoon who spends his days picking
Twitter fights with people he sees on TV. He displays no skill,
sophistication or capacity for subtle nuance in foreign or
domestic policy. But Trump’s personal ineffectualness has not
kept his administration from rapidly reversing the direction of
the federal government in key areas…

Nature a Powerful Force to Fight Climate Change. One month in, it
is still hard to process President Donald Trump's decision to
pull America out of the 2015 Paris climate agreement. And yet as
the Group of 20 leading economies meets in Hamburg, Germany, this
week, the other 19 countries in attendance remain committed to
the agreement. Not one country, rich or poor, has dropped out.

Air Pollution Solutions via Innovative CleanTech. The fight
against air pollution is a costly battle being waged on a global
scale. Famously catastrophic, the overwhelming air pollution in
China has only worsened since receiving the media spotlight in
Beijing for the 2008 Olympics. China represents an extreme
example of what our world could become.

Indigenous knowledge Helps Scientists To Assess Climate Change.
Climate change is already well visible in the Alps. Over the last
century, many glaciers have retreated back farther than humans
have ever witnessed in historic times. The risk for rock-falls
and landslides has significantly increased over time, impacting
infrastructure and forcing to close traditional routes for
tourists.

Scientists Grapple With the Mysteries of Greenland’s Melting Ice
Sheet. The ice sheet’s thaw has sped up in recent years – a
change that could have a significant impact on global sea levels.
Scientific research underway may help explain why. Every year,
Greenland sheds more than 250 gigatons of ice – enough to fill
the entire state of Texas with over a foot of water. Despite
being one-tenth the size of Antarctica, Greenland’s ice sheet is
now the single largest contributor to sea-level rise.
