Kids in Napa won't hear the usual "clackety clack" of a diesel engine when district bus HY-2 lumbers up to their stop next month. In fact, when the bus is sitting still, they won't hear anything at all.Within a week or two, Napa Valley Unified School District will premiere one of the first small hybrid buses in the nation, thanks to state grants aimed at curbing school bus emissions and a transportation manager's aggressive campaign to green his fleet. The California Air Resources Board last week fined Sunbelt Rentals $98,500 for emissions violations in 2007 and 2008 around the state. During a routine investigation, ARB investigators found that Sunbelt Rentals, headquartered in Fort Mill, S.C., failed to conduct diesel truck smoke tests in 2007 and 2008 at 20 of its California fleet facilities. Environmental groups presented a federal official with more than 19,000 signed letters and postcards Tuesday asking the U.S. government to set stricter rules to prevent pollution in the Chesapeake Bay. Governor Schwarzenegger has declared a state of emergency in San Bernardino County. At the time of publishing this article both the Yucaipa and Pendleton fires are between 25% and 40% contained.
