Will U.S. Go Empty-Handed To World Climate Talks? Without a new
law requiring cuts in greenhouse gas emissions, the U.S. could
end up going empty-handed to the international climate talks in
December. Many nations are watching to see whether the Senate
will make progress on a climate and energy bill that would spell
out the U.S. national emissions-reduction plan. Posted.

EU Split Over Climate Change Goal. The European Union fought
Thursday to live up to its self-proclaimed leadership on
combating climate change, with the 27 EU leaders at odds over how
much to offer poorer nations to join the global battle. Posted.

Editorial: Climate Zealots Likely To Be Told To Cool Their
Heels. The world can breathe a sigh of relief. Unnecessary
economic destruction at the hands of climate zealots is likely to
be averted at least another year. An international treaty to
combat global warming almost certainly won't be reached this
year, despite U.N. and climate change extremists' insistence that
agreement on worldwide greenhouse gas-emission limits must be
reached at December's 190-nation climate summit in Copenhagen,
Denmark. Posted.

Ask AP: Geo-Engineering, Bernard Madoff's Assets. Purposely
polluting the upper atmosphere? Reflecting sunlight with giant
space mirrors? These aren't the tactics of a Hollywood
supervillain — they're controversial "geo-engineering" ideas that
some say would help combat global warming. Posted.

The Earth Cools, and Fight Over Warming Heats Up. Two years ago,
a United Nations scientific panel won the Nobel Peace Prize after
concluding that global warming is "unequivocal" and is "very
likely" caused by man. Then came a development unforeseen by the
U.N.'s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, or IPCC: Data
suggested that Earth's temperature was beginning to drop. Posted.

PRUDEN: Great Pumpkin Soon Upon Us. The Senate is losing its
grip on unreality, so it may be up to whoever can teach manners
to cows and pigs to save us from the consequences of global
warming. (We're supposed to call it "climate change" now, but
some of us, being strict constructionists, remain faithful to the
original text as set down by the founding father, Al Gore.)

Methane's Role In Global Warming Underestimated. Greenhouse gas
calculations blame carbon dioxide too much for global warming,
and methane too little, suggest researchers Thursday. Posted.

Washington's Carbon Rules Need Refining. Wall Street gets
shouted at, but Washington at least doles out financial support.
Oil refiners don't even get that. Bill Klesse, chief executive of
Valero Energy, visited the Senate this week warning about the
damage climate-change legislation could do to the U.S. refining
sector. Posted.

PG&E's Climatesmart Program Draws Little Interest. A 2-year-old
PG&E program to help customers offset the size of their carbon
footprint has drawn little interest and consumer advocates are
arguing it should be allowed to expire at the end of the year.
Only 30,000 households and businesses have enrolled in
"ClimateSmart," which allows residential and commercial customers
of the San Francisco-based utility to add a tax-deductible
"donation" to their monthly bill that allows PG&E to buy carbon
offsets. Posted. http://www.mercurynews.com/valley/ci_13670571

Our Green-Energy Future. The October issue of The Atlantic
magazine includes an interesting article, “The California
Experiment,” by Ronald Brownstein. The title refers to what the
author sees—in the midst of “busted budgets, failing schools,
overcrowded prisons, gridlocked government”—as the state’s
singular success: tackling climate change and, in doing so,
creating a new energy economy. Posted.

California Wins Lawsuit For More Water/Energy-Efficient Clothes

Washers. Washing machines account for 20% of an average
household’s water use in California, but that may change now that
the California Energy Commission has prevailed in a years-long
lawsuit against the U.S. Department of Energy, which had
prevented the commission from adopting a more water- and
energy-efficient standard for clothes washers. Posted.
