The bottom line: The 2010 Mercedes-Benz S400 Hybrid is more of a fashion statement than it is an environmental, conservation or performance statement. Equally good fuel economy, with emissions low enough to meet the tough air quality standards of the California Air Resources Board, can be had through the company's advanced diesel offerings, such as the E320 BlueTec sedan. Posted. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/11/13/AR2009111302852_pf.html OPINION: Clearing The Air. ‘Cool cars’ backfire,” Editorial, Nov. 8 Re “ You mischaracterize the California Air Resources Board's (CARB) new standard to reduce air conditioning use in cars. The standard is performance-based and allows automakers to develop their own approach to meet the targets. Five automakers already offer "cool windows" technology as a standard feature without interfering with cellphone or GPS use. Pittsburgh Glass Works, Guardian Industries and 3M are already commercializing new products that comply with the 2012 target. Posted. http://www.latimes.com/news/opinion/letters/ OPINION: The Times Makes A Very Insightful Observation About The CARB Regulation: "Don't mandate specific technologies, just set broad standards and let manufacturers or polluters figure out how to meet them." What The Times misses is that this approach has been going on for years. As far back as 2005, CARB has affected international shipping by dictating specific technologies and fuels rather than limiting emissions. This approach creates a disincentive for innovation, a competitive disadvantage for the goods-movement industry in California and uncertainty for the industry. http://www.latimes.com/news/opinion/letters/ So You Want A Green Career? The giant push for eco-friendly practices has created job opportunities for those with little or no experience. Although the recession has emptied shopping malls and filled jobless centers, the call has only gotten louder for renewable energy, environmentally gentle products and eco-friendly practices -- and for people to make all of that happen. President Obama has said that he hopes to create 5 million green jobs within a decade. The U.S. Conference of Mayors estimates that the "green economy" could account for as much as 10% of job growth over the next 30 years. On the vast expanse of asphalt outside Dodger Stadium, Nissan Motor Co.'s new electric car made its U.S. debut Friday, zipping quietly through a maze of orange cones on its way to what the Japanese automaker hopes will be the top of the clean transportation class. This is probably the most important bilateral talk before the climate negotiations in Copenhagen, where the world will be pressing both the United States and China to act. California, the world's eighth-largest economy, is seen as a model of policies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. As global warming concerns grow, scientists are taking seriously some of the seemingly crazy proposals of geo-engineering. One suggestion: Launch a million tiny mirrors into space. Every minute. If there were some kind of panic button to stop global warming, what would it look like? How about billions of tiny mirrors, launched into orbit to deflect solar rays away from Earth? Brazil will try for a minimum reduction of 36 percent in its greenhouse gas emissions from projected levels in 2020, the government said Friday, pledging a deep cut weeks before a United Nations climate summit meeting. The pledge, while not binding, aims to encourage other nations to adopt aggressive cuts and make a global deal more likely at the meeting in December in Copenhagen. By acknowledging over the weekend that the world would have to wait at least until next year for a legally binding treaty to curb global warming, President Obama and fellow Pacific Rim leaders dramatically lowered expectations for next month's climate negotiations in Copenhagen. China is coming up against harsh criticism from the United States and European Union for its efforts to curb pollution. China decided last year to begin levying a 40 percent tax on coke used to make steel, which prompted the United States and European Union to formally cry foul to the World Trade Organization last week, saying the tariffs unfairly inflate prices for overseas buyers. One hundred percent of car sales will be zero emission vehicles in 2050. That’s the vision of the California Air Resources Board, explained in a meeting in late October to review the state's zero emission vehicle (ZEV) strategy. At the meeting, the agency outlined the roadmap for getting there. What’s the basis of the CARB plan?
