English Teacher Treks With Antarctica Scientists, Journals About
Discoveries. Santa Cruz - When the science gets tough, Tina
Sander gets writing. The Cabrillo College and Santa Cruz Adult
School teacher is going on a three-month expedition to Antarctica
in October with the ICE AGED Project. The project is a group
venture between 10 scientists from the Moss Landing Marine
Laboratories, Scripps Institute of Oceanography and the Monterey

Newspapers Retract Faulty Climate Reporting. The reverberations
of the scandal many refer to as "climategate," which erupted last
December after personal emails between top climate scientists
were taken from a British University server and posted online,
continue... but they are taking some new twists and turns.

Obama, Senators Grapple With 'Cap And Trade,' Energy Bill.
President Obama and a bipartisan group of senators met today to
gear up for political battle over a "cap and trade" system to
address global warming -- a "polluter pays" provision in the view

Low Carbon Fuel Standard Could Result in Price Shock. A
nationwide low carbon fuel standard would significantly increase
the costs of transportation and fuel, according to a study
conducted by Charles River Associates. The study found that a
standard would result in a price shock, including an increase of
about 30 to 80 percent in the cost of transportation fuels within
five years of the standard being implemented. This would be
caused by the large increase in production of low carbon fuels
required to achieve the emissions reductions. Posted.

CARBON EMISSIONS

Sen. Snowe Is Working Quietly to Find 'Consensus' on Capping
Utility Emissions. Republican Sen. Olympia Snowe expressed
support yesterday for making electric utilities pay fees for
releasing carbon dioxide, giving Senate Democrats a critical
Republican supporter in their stalled pursuit of climate
legislation. Posted.

DIESEL

More Fleets Keeping an Eye on Emissions. Almost half of fleets
are measuring emissions, compared with 40 percent in 2009 and 28
percent in 2008, according to an annual survey conducted by PHH
Arval. The survey was designed to gauge fleet managers' insights
into environmental issues, how fleets are implementing solutions
that would reduce their greenhouse gas emissions and more. Of
those fleets that are measuring emissions, 65 percent are using
actual fuel data to measure, a more than 10 percent increase over
last year. Posted.

ENERGY

Energy Bill: Can Senators Reach Agreement? Even as the sense of
urgency to address the energy issue grows, momentum on the energy
and climate bill is still stalled. The idea of a cap on carbon
has become a central point of contention between Democrats and
Republicans. The death of Sen. Robert Byrd, who, despite hailing
from coal-producing West Virginia, became a proponent of
fostering clean energy and passing a comprehensive bill, has also
cast doubt on whether there will be enough Democratic votes to
pass a partisan bill. Posted.

Sorting Myth and Reality in Climate Policy. The Energy
Collective is a valuable aggregator of views on one of the prime
challenges of our time — how to provide the energy required to
foster a smooth path beyond “peak us” while cutting the risks of
economic turmoil, resource conflicts or disruptive climate
change. In a fresh post, Darrene Hackler summarizes conclusions
from a new report she wrote with Robert D. Atkinson (they both
hail from the Information Technology and Innovation Foundation, a
nonprofit research group) that rebuts 10 prominent strategies for
avoiding dangerous human-driven climate change. Posted.
