CLIMATE CHANGE/GHG’S

Fiorina Says Calif. Climate Law Is Killing Jobs. Sacramento,
Calif. - GOP Senate candidate Carly Fiorina appeared on a
national cable news show Wednesday asserting that California's
law to fight global warming is killing jobs, but a review shows
its economic effects remain uncertain. In an interview on CNBC's
"Closing Bell," Fiorina said she is trying to unseat Democratic
Sen. Barbara Boxer in part because of the lawmaker's push for
federal greenhouse gas legislation inspired by California's 2006
climate law, called the Global Warming Solutions Act but commonly
referred to as AB32. Posted.

DRY CLEANERS

Stricter Dry Cleaning Regulations Take Effect. Today’s the
deadline for dry cleaning businesses in California to stop
operating machines that use a toxic solvent known as “Perc”. But
there’s some flexibility with that deadline – and
environmentalists aren’t happy about it. Sacramento, CA - Sarah
Lee owns Country Club Cleaners in Sacramento. She’s been in the
dry cleaning business for close to 20-years…and for nearly all of
those years she’s used “Perc” or perchloroethylene. Posted.

California Offers Up To One Year To Remove Perc. California
cleaners struggling to comply with the July 1 deadline for
removing perc machines that are 15 years old or older may get a
break from enforcement authorities. Posted.

State Passes New Environmental Regulations For Dry Cleaners. If
you take your clothes in to get dry cleaned, you may notice a
difference in the way they smell when you get them back. That
scent comes from a commonly used solvent called perchloroethylene
or “Perc." The California Air Resources Board has ordered dry
cleaning businesses to start phasing out machines that use the
solvent starting July 1st. Posted.

Electricity Rebate Offer Promotes Wetcleaning. SMUD (The
Sacramento Municipal Utility District) in California has set up
the Express Incentive scheme, which offers electricity rebates to
encourage drycleaners to switch from perc to professional
wetcleaning. Posted.

ENERGY

Home Loan Snafu Halts Green Loans In California. Millions of
dollars in green financing for California homeowners is being
held up by a dispute between local government agencies and
federal housing officials. A new state program allowing
homeowners to pay for solar panel installations and other energy
efficiency improvements through their property taxes was put on
hold in Placer County and San Francisco in May after federally
backed mortgage lending giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac began
raising questions about such loans. Posted.

EPA withdraws approval of 200,000 vehicles. The Environmental
Protection Agency has withdrawn its approval of up to 200,000
off-road vehicles imported from China. The California Air
Resources Board has followed suit, voiding its executive orders
covering the same vehicles that were sold in California. Posted.

rails and port yards that have been retrofitted with a filter,
the Drayage Truck Registry should reflect a 12/31/13 compliance
date to avoid being turned away starting today, July 1. Posted.

the San Joaquin Valley may be able to get more funding from the
voter-approved Proposition 1B to help pay for replacing or
retrofitting older diesel-fired trucks. Posted.

BLOGS

What if the Public Had Perfect Climate Information? Not
surprisingly, Joe Romm, “America’s fiercest climate blogger,” has
assaulted my piece examining ways in which scientists might make
scientific information on issues like global warming more
impactful. How could I write such a piece — he says — without
also including a big dollop of blame for institutions and
individuals doling out reams of scientific disinformation to
complacent journalists? Of course there’s disinformation on
climate and energy, and The Times has long documented it,
whatever the source. Posted.
