arbcombo -- The Amendments to the California Indoor Air Cleaner Regulation

Posted: 22 Sep 2010 15:02:19
All of the amendments to the California indoor air cleaner
regulation that were approved by the California Air Resources
Board in December 2009 received final State approval on September
9, 2010. The amendments will become effective on October 9,
2010. The approved amendments: 1) extend the deadline for
package labeling of certified air cleaners to October 18, 2011;
2) allow adhesive labels to be used in place of printing on the
package until October 1, 2012; 3) allow electrical safety testing
to be conducted at additional test facilities; 4) allow
multi-function devices that include an air cleaner component to
meet the electrical safety standard for their primary function
instead of the electrical safety requirements of UL Standards
507 or 867 (however, electronic air cleaners must still meet the
ozone emission limits in Section 37 of UL Standard 867); and
other minor amendments. Further information on the amendments
and on the regulation requirements is available at
http://www.arb.ca.gov/research/indoor/aircleaners/manufacturers.htm.

Manufacturers of air cleaners for which certification has been
pending based on the amendments will soon receive letters
confirming approval of those air cleaners.

Air cleaner manufacturers who have not yet complied with the
notification, testing and certification requirements of the air
cleaner regulation should review the contents of the webpage
above carefully (especially the updated Frequently Asked
Questions) and contact ARB staff with any questions (see contacts
below). All air cleaners manufactured, distributed, offered for
sale, or entered into commerce in California must be tested and
certified by ARB by October 18, 2010. All manufacturers of such
air cleaners are also required to notify their distributors,
retailers and sellers about the regulation; the first compliance
date for this requirement was October 18, 2009.
