U.S. EPA and the Department of Transportation are planning an afternoon release for a proposal to set the first-ever limits on greenhouse gas emissions from heavy-duty trucks and buses, the agencies announced today. In a Rose Garden ceremony this May, President Obama directed EPA and DOT to extend corporate average fuel economy (CAFE) standards to new trucks and buses as part of a broader crackdown on the emissions that are contributing to global warming. Sacramento, Calif.—A new poll shows a ballot initiative that would suspend California's greenhouse gas emissions law losing support. A University of Southern California-Los Angeles Times poll released Monday shows 48 percent of likely voters oppose Proposition 23, compared to 32 percent who support it. Nearly one in five voters remains undecided. Last month, the same poll showed 40 percent of likely voters favored the initiative with 38 percent opposed. Have $200,000 to spend on space travel? Before you book your seat into the cosmos, you may want to know about the potential impact back on Earth. A new study finds that the soot emitted from rockets could become a significant contributor to climate change in coming decades. Researchers say the study, funded by NASA and the Aerospace Corporation, offers the first detailed look at how rockets using hydrocarbon fuel might affect the planet's climate. Continued near-record sea-ice loss and higher-than-normal temperatures are melting the Arctic, federal researchers reported Wednesday. And the changes in the Arctic may be setting the stage for a future "climate change paradox" of more intense U.S. winters, they warn, even as the polar cap shrinks. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's "Arctic Report Card" warns that thinning sea ice around the North Pole continues a trend in effect since 2007. Negotiators may be able to agree on ways to adapt to climate change, transfer technologies and slow deforestation when they meet next month in Cancun, Mexico, a senior European Union official said today. “What is within reach is a number of agreements that would allow concrete actions to start,” Laurence Graff, head of international relations unit at the European Commission’s climate department, told a seminar today in Brussels. The more carbon that gets released into the atmosphere, the higher the average temperature rises. That's a scientific fact. Human activities, such as driving, flying, building and even turning on the lights, are the biggest contributor to the release of carbon. That too, is a fact. And yet the majority of Republicans running for House and Senate seats this year disagree. Ken Buck, the GOP senate candidate in Colorado admits he's a climate change denier. U.S. forests sequester enough carbon every year to offset roughly 11 percent of the country's industrial greenhouse gas emissions, according to a new federal report. Shifting land-use patterns - particularly the 20th century abandonment of farms in the East and the subsequent regrowth of woodlands - have helped turn U.S. forests as a whole into a carbon sink, meaning they absorb more carbon dioxide from the atmosphere than they release through natural processes.Posted. http://www.miamiherald.com/2010/10/25/1890062/nations-forests-help-offset-greenhouse.html FUELS Oil Sands Effort Turns on a Fight Over a Road. Opponents of Proposition 23 are outspending supporters of the measure by more than two to one, according to news reports. But spending issues are obscuring key concerns, particularly the “global warming” controversy. Prop. 23 would suspend California’s Global Warming Solutions Act of 2006, also known as AB 32, until the Golden State reduces unemployment to 5.5 percent. California’s current rate of unemployment is 12.4 percent, one of the highest in the United States, and the true figure is likely much higher. The truth is that it doesn’t really matter what Republicans or climate contrarians believe. Despite enormous efforts to discount the research and data of climatologists, there is a vast body of evidence supporting the theory of climate change across many disciplines that study our planet: biology, physics, chemistry and ecology. The well has been capped, and commerce in the Gulf of Mexico is slowly reviving. Much important work still lies ahead - figuring out how much oil is still out there, cleaning it up, measuring the damage to marine life, compensating victims. And Congress needs to pass an oil-spill bill that will reduce the chances of another drilling debacle. The House has passed a bill that would tighten environmental safeguards, require companies to furnish detailed response plans before receiving drilling permits, and reorganize the government to prevent the conflicts of interest that helped lead to the BP spill. Ôªø All you need to know about Proposition 23 is that it is being bankrolled by three huge oil companies from Texas and Kansas so they can avoid complying with environmental controls in California and so make more money. It's not about jobs. It's not about the environment. It's about profits. Proposition 23 would suspend the provisions of AB 32, the 2006 landmark climate-change initiative that would reduce greenhouse gases in California, under the pretense of helping the economy. I was very disappointed to read Dr. Richard Malotky’s two recent articles regarding global warming. One of the most distressing things was Dr. Malotky’s need to disparage the motives of scientists doing research in this field and mock the intelligence of people who disagree with him. To be fair, there have also been some unnecessarily nasty things said about Dr. Malotky in the Record Searchlight’s online comments section. The Proposition 23 ballot initiative in California is a chance for a grass-roots expression on climate change -- and to send a signal to a stymied Congress. America rarely sees a popular vote directly on global warming, let alone one also tied to the economy. Most government action to deter climate change has largely been left to elected leaders, regulators, or judges – with few results so far.
