sf6elec -- SF6 From Gas Insulated Switchgear Working Group Meeting

Posted: 12 Jul 2011 10:45:56
Air Resources Board (ARB) staff will be hosting a sulfur
hexafluoride (SF6) emission reductions from gas insulated
switchgear (GIS) working group meeting on Thursday, August 11,
2011, at the Cal/EPA building in Sacramento. The purpose of the
working group meeting will be to discuss any issues or concerns
that GIS owners and operators may have with implementing the
recently adopted Regulation for Reducing Sulfur Hexafluoride
Emissions from Gas Insulated Switchgear (Regulation).

Further details on the working group meeting can be found at:
http://www.arb.ca.gov/cc/sf6elec/sf6elec.htm.

If you have any questions regarding this working group meeting or
the Regulation, please contact David Mehl, Energy Section
Manager, at (916) 323-1491 or dmehl@arb.ca.gov; or Tom Pomales,
Air Pollution Specialist, at (916) 324-0343 or
tpomales@arb.ca.gov.

Background

The Regulation requires owners of GIS equipment to reduce
emissions of SF6. The Regulation sets a limit of a 10 percent
SF6 emission rate in 2011. Thereafter, the SF6 emission rate is
reduced one percent per year until 2020, whereat the SF6 emission
rate is one percent.

On February 2, 2011, the Office of Administrative Law (OAL)
approved sections 95350, 95351, 95352, 95353, 95354, 95355,
95357, 95358 and 95359 of the Regulation to Reduce Sulfur
Hexafluoride (SF6) Emissions from Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS)
(Regulation). OAL also filed the Regulation with the Secretary
of State on February 2, 2011, and made the Regulation effective
on this same date. On June 27, 2011, section 95356 of the
Regulation became effective as OAL approved this section and
filed it with the Secretary of State.
