Posted: 12 Jul 2011 10:45:56
Air Resources Board (ARB) staff will be hosting a sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) emission reductions from gas insulated switchgear (GIS) working group meeting on Thursday, August 11, 2011, at the Cal/EPA building in Sacramento. The purpose of the working group meeting will be to discuss any issues or concerns that GIS owners and operators may have with implementing the recently adopted Regulation for Reducing Sulfur Hexafluoride Emissions from Gas Insulated Switchgear (Regulation). Further details on the working group meeting can be found at: http://www.arb.ca.gov/cc/sf6elec/sf6elec.htm. If you have any questions regarding this working group meeting or the Regulation, please contact David Mehl, Energy Section Manager, at (916) 323-1491 or dmehl@arb.ca.gov; or Tom Pomales, Air Pollution Specialist, at (916) 324-0343 or tpomales@arb.ca.gov. Background The Regulation requires owners of GIS equipment to reduce emissions of SF6. The Regulation sets a limit of a 10 percent SF6 emission rate in 2011. Thereafter, the SF6 emission rate is reduced one percent per year until 2020, whereat the SF6 emission rate is one percent. On February 2, 2011, the Office of Administrative Law (OAL) approved sections 95350, 95351, 95352, 95353, 95354, 95355, 95357, 95358 and 95359 of the Regulation to Reduce Sulfur Hexafluoride (SF6) Emissions from Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS) (Regulation). OAL also filed the Regulation with the Secretary of State on February 2, 2011, and made the Regulation effective on this same date. On June 27, 2011, section 95356 of the Regulation became effective as OAL approved this section and filed it with the Secretary of State.
