schoolbus -- Lower-Emission School Bus Program Mail-Out #MSC 13-02 Replacement Bus Emission Criteria
Posted: 29 Jan 2013 16:32:23
The California Air Resources Board (ARB) has posted Mail-Out #MSC 13-02, titled “The Lower-Emission School Bus Program – 2013 Model Year Replacement Bus Emission Criteria – Effective January 1, 2013 to December 31, 2013.” ARB staff has reviewed executive orders for 2013 model year school bus engines and determined that although some buses will be available from manufacturers at less than 0.50 grams per brake horsepower-hour (g/bhp-hr) for oxides of nitrogen (NOx), a significant portion of new buses are expected to remain at 0.50 g/bhp-hr. Therefore, in order to ensure that sufficient new buses are available to replace older buses, ARB maintains the 0.50 g/bhp-hr NOx and 0.01 g/bhp-hr particulate matter maximum emission criteria for contracts executed through calendar year 2013. The Mail-Out may be found on ARB’s webpage at: http://www.arb.ca.gov/bonds/schoolbus/advisory/advisory.htm . For more information about the Lower-Emission School Bus Program, please go to: http://www.arb.ca.gov/msprog/schoolbus/schoolbus.htm . If you have questions regarding this Mail-Out, please contact Ms. Kimya Lambert, Air Pollution Specialist, at (916) 323-2507, or via email at klambert@arb.ca.gov . Background: The primary goal of the ARB's Lower-Emission School Bus Program is to reduce school children's exposure to both cancer-causing and smog-forming pollution. The program provides grant funding for new, safer school buses and to put air pollution control equipment (i.e., retrofit devices) on buses that are already on the road.
