AIR POLLUTION

Cancer risk from Southern California air declining. Southern
California's air is getting healthier. According to a major air
quality study released Thursday, cancer-causing pollutants have
dropped by more than 50 percent on average since 2005. That's
when the South Coast Air Quality Management District last
monitored air quality so extensively in Los Angeles, Orange,
Riverside and San Bernardino counties. Posted.

Full inspections of frack sand mines mostly undone. A report says
only 20 percent of active frack sand mine operations have been
inspected by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources to
ensure compliance with air pollution rules. The mining company
needs an air permit from the DNR before beginning operations.
Then it's up to the agency to do a full compliance evaluation to
determine if the company is following the rules. Posted.

Port air study hit. A report submitted Tuesday to state
regulators labels as "irresponsible" their conclusion that
airborne chemical concentrations in Albany's South End weren't a
health concern. The report by David O. Carpenter, director of the
Institute for Health and the Environment at the State University
of New York at Albany, said that air samples in 20 of 21 cases
showed elevated levels of benzene, a known human carcinogen.

CLIMATE CHANGE

Climate Change May Kill More Than Ebola, U.K. Doctors Say.
Climate change may kill many more people than the Ebola virus, a
group of U.K. doctors said in a call for the World Health
Organization to declare the issue a public emergency. Burning
fossil fuels causes about 7 million premature deaths from indoor
and outdoor air pollution, according to the BMJ, a medical
journal owned by the British Medical Association. Posted.

Climate Change's Role in Indian Pilgrim Deaths. When the heavens
opened over several Himalayan foothill states in northern India
for four cataclysmic days last summer, they rained unprecedented
hell over villagers, and over streams of pilgrims visiting
temples and other holy sites. Floods and landslides tore
vulnerable buildings and villages from their feeble riverside
roots, flushing their ramshackle remains downstream. Posted.

Encinitas Resident Conserves Every Drop To Combat Climate Change.
It's been hot in San Diego. Record temperature hot. Our utility
grid is taxed, and water is in short supply. Scientists predict
all of this will continue thanks to climate change. Many people
are doing what they can to reduce their impact on the
environment, but some take it much further than others. Posted.

MIT: Global Energy Use, CO2 May Double By 2100. Even as curbing
greenhouse gas emissions becomes more urgent as the effects of
climate change become more acute, fossil fuels will remain the
largest source of GHGs far into the 21st Century as both global
energy use and CO2 emissions double, according to MIT’s 2014
Climate and Energy Outlook. Posted.

Warring camps seem to agree: It's the economy, stupid. The fight
over global warming in Washington, D.C., has shifted from climate
science to the dismal science. It's all economy, all the time.
Senior administration officials have played up economics with
coordinated talking points in recent weeks. U.S. EPA
Administrator Gina McCarthy, Treasury Secretary Jacob Lew, and
White House Office of Management and Budget chief Shaun Donovan
have talked up President Obama's Climate Action Plan…Posted.

DROUGHT

Amid crippling drought, California voters see no relief at the
polls. As November midterm elections loom, state residents appear
not to be prioritizing drought issue California residents face
stiff fines if they use too much water. Wells in some communities
are running dry. Farmers are drilling deeper and deeper in search
of what has become liquid gold. Posted.

Republicans craft 2015 plan to force Obama's hand on Keystone.
Republicans plan to put approval of the long-delayed Keystone XL
oil pipeline on a fast track early next year if they win a U.S.

Obama to make a tough call on the controversial plan. The $10
billion Keystone project to connect Canadian oil sands with U.S.

combustion chambers have let automakers churn out
high-performance cars and meet stringent government fuel

GREEN ENERGY

Walgreens' designs prove an upgrade for shoppers. The company
and the Chicago architects with which it frequently works,
Camburas & Theodore, have also won awards for a third
Chicago-area location. The store's tiered roof has nearly 850
electricity-generating solar panels, though it has yet to reach
its highly publicized "net zero" goal of producing as much energy
as it consumes…Posted.

decision filed paperwork with the state attorney general’s office

OPINIONS

Mr. Obama’s Pacific Monument. Still, environmental groups are
uniformly praising him for going as big as he did and for defying
opposition from Hawaiian fishing interests whose loyalties lie
with the producers of canned tuna. That industry has other places
to fish; it will not suffer. But, at a time when the world’s
oceans are threatened by rampant pollution, overfishing and
climate change…Posted.

Smoke in the air. Why is it that people who smoke treat the
world like it’s their own portable ashtray? There are over 1
billion smokers on the planet. If they all smoke one pack of
cigarettes and deposit their cigarette butts into the
environment, imagine what that toxic waste site would look like.

D’Amato: Stéphane Dion and his hated carbon tax were right all
along. Remember former federal Liberal leader Stéphane Dion? In
the election of 2008 he went down in flames after he proposed a
carbon tax for Canadians. It was a forward-thinking idea: People
would pay less income tax, but the cost of fossil fuels like
gasoline would go up. Businesses and individuals would save money
if they used less energy…Posted.

Congress Needn't Look Any Further Than California on How to
Combat Climate Change | Commentary. President Barack Obama’s
recent address to a global audience at the United Nations Climate
Summit, coupled with the executive order he unveiled the same
day, make even more evident the need to combat climate change
despite some reluctance coming from Congress. Posted.

Warming up. Prospects for international agreement on combating
climate change look brighter. There is much for the world to be
pessimistic about these days. The double crises of the Ebola
outbreak in West Africa and Islamic extremism in the Middle East,
for example, pose real dangers. So it says much for the one-day
United Nations summit on climate change…Posted.

April, but very few people noticed. And it is about to happen
again with the return of the semi-annual "California Climate

attention because it is the rare case where funds raised by a
price on carbon are sent back to households…Posted.

A newly-minted 'genius' hopes to stop pollution from soot and
smoke. You probably know black carbon as soot or smoke, the stuff
that comes from burning fossil fuels like coal and diesel as well
as forest fires and cooking stoves. What you may not know is that
scientists believe black carbon is second only to carbon dioxide
as a contributor to climate change. Posted.
