Mysterious Sources Of Methane Viewed From Space Makes Central
California 2nd Worst ‘Hot Spot’ In Nation
A small hot spot in California’s Central Valley is likely the
second largest concentration of the greenhouse gas methane seen
over the United States, according to a new study of satellite
data by scientists at NASA and the University of Michigan.

Kern supervisors sued over refinery plans
The Kern County Board of Supervisors is being sued over its
approval last month of the reopening and expansion of the Alon
Bakersfield Refinery to process Bakken crude oil. The lawsuit
says Kern County failed to meet its legal duty to fully assess
the project’s risks and disclose them to the public.

AIR QUALITY: Smog worse in 2014
Smog season 2014 just doesn’t want to quit.  Thanks to continuing
hot, stagnant weather, Southern California continued this week to
have poor air quality, with pollution levels exceeding the
federal health standard.

DIESEL EMISSIONS

CARB fines bus company $388,000 for bypassing DPFs, sensors
The California Air Resources Board says a bus company modified
its diesel particulate filters and sensors to avoid complying
with California emissions regulations. That company will now pay
$388,000 in fines.

Desert Renewable Energy Conservation Plan Proposed for Southern
California
Last month, the Department of Interior (DOI) proposed a
landscape-level plan for conservation and renewable energy
development in Southern California.  It took five years to create
the "Desert Renewable Energy Conservation Plan," which covers
over 22.5 million acres of California desert.

Stanford's GCEP awards $10.5M for research on renewable energy;
solar cells, batteries, renewable fuels and bioenergy
The Global Climate and Energy Project (GCEP) at Stanford
University has awarded $10.5 million for seven research projects
designed to advance a broad range of renewable energy
technologies, including solar cells, batteries, renewable fuels
and bioenergy. The seven awards bring the total number of
GCEP-supported research programs to 117 since the project's
launch in 2002.
