AIR POLLUTION

Beijing Govt Says Air Had Less Pollution in 1st Part of Year. A
key measure of air pollutants in China's capital showed a 19
percent drop in the first three months of the year, local
authorities said Wednesday. Beijing's municipal government said
Wednesday that the density of PM2.5 — harmful particles that are
smaller than 2.5 microns in diameter — was 92.7 micrograms per
cubic meter for the quarter, an improvement from 114 in the same
period last year.

Fracking waste puts public at risk, study says. Weakness in
state regulations governing hazardous oil-and-gas waste have
allowed the leftovers to be disposed of with little regard to the
dangers they pose to human health and the environment, according

Reducing school bus pollution improves children's health. Use of
clean fuels and updated pollution control measures in the school
buses 25 million children ride every day could result in 14
million fewer absences from school a year, based on a study by
the University of Michigan and the University of Washington. In
research believed to be the first to measure the individual
impact on children of the federal mandate to reduce diesel
emissions, researchers found improved health and less
absenteeism, especially among asthmatic children.

Students, campuses in state add saving water to college life. In

cutting waste and preserving the environment: They take
five-minute showers, they compost and recycle, they goad each
other to turn out the lights and, through a grant, they purchased
reusable plastic and bamboo dishes and utensils for personal use
in the dorm.

Why don’t GOP presidential candidates address climate change?
Because they want to win. A politician has a choice to make when
he or she is running for office: One can hold a position that
comports with one's beliefs even if the electorate objects, or
one can tell the electorate what it wants to hear. In the overlap
of climate change politics and the 2016 election, Republican
candidates are almost uniformly rejecting the idea that human
activity is making the world warmer.

Five quick fixes to global warming and why we probably shouldn’t
try them. Extreme weather, water shortages and imperiled polar
bears: The effects of climate change are obvious and dire. To
stem the tide — literally and figuratively — even educated
experts are now pitching ideas straight out of science fiction.
On some level, it’s understandable. The grim reality of climate
change poses some well-documented problems for humans. The
biggest challenge, so far, has been convincing people to do less
harm when it comes to the climate.

New York Today: In Praise of Earth. Happy Earth Day. Like many
good ideas, Earth Day has some roots in New York City. The first
Earth Day, 45 years ago, was centered in New York, where hundreds
of thousands came out in support. Mayor John V. Lindsay gave
momentum to the fledgling holiday by shutting down Fifth Avenue,
and much of 14th Street, for demonstrations.
