CALIFORNIA CLIMATE LEADERSHIP BILL

California Lawmakers Advance Aggressive Climate Change Plans.
California lawmakers on Wednesday pushed through an ambitious
climate change package to further reduce the state's carbon
footprint and boost the use of renewable energy to 50 percent in
15 years. The state Senate passed proposals to enact Gov. Jerry
Brown's call to curb greenhouse gas emissions by setting what the
administration calls the most aggressive benchmark in North
America over the objection of Republicans who characterized such
regulation as coastal elitism that would kill working-class
jobs.

California passes ambitious laws on emissions and energy
efficiency. California lawmakers have passed a dozen ambitious
environmental and energy bills setting high goals for reducing
greenhouse gas emissions and petroleum use, and creating new
standards for energy efficiency. Dubbed the California climate
leadership package, the 12 bills represent a Democratic-driven
push in the Senate to advance an agenda of technological
innovation and conservation that was put into play by an
executive order by California Governor Jerry Brown in April. The
package will next move to the assembly for debate.

California lawmakers boost climate change bills. Continuing the
state’s efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and combat
climate change, California lawmakers approved expansive
legislation Wednesday that will require ambitious new renewable
energy and pollution standards over the coming decades. In the
Senate, the effort was led by President Pro Tem Kevin de León and
fellow Democrats, who touted the economic benefits of building a
green economy.

Calif. Senate passes climate package aiming for 50% renewable
power, halving petroleum use. California's Senate yesterday
accelerated the state's push for clean energy, passing a bundle
of climate bills that aimed to shrink sharply greenhouse gas
emissions, increase renewable power to 50 percent of electricity
and chop in half petroleum use by 2030.

Climate Bills Move Forward At The State Capitol. California
lawmakers have advanced several measures intended to reduce
greenhouse gas emissions over the next few decades. Legislation
that would implement goals set earlier this year by Gov. Jerry
Brown is on its way to the Assembly after passing the Senate.

State senate approves bills to combat global warming. The
California Senate on Wednesday approved a sweeping package of
climate change bills designed to cement the Golden State’s
reputation as a national leader in the fight against global
warming. If enacted, the legislation will in the years ahead
trigger a fundamental shift in the kinds of cars Californians
drive and the way they power their homes and businesses.

Climate change: California Senate approves legislation to combat
global warming. The state Senate on Wednesday approved a
far-reaching array of bills designed to cement the Golden State's
reputation as an international leader in the fight against
climate change. If enacted, the legislation will trigger a
fundamental shift in the kinds of cars and trucks Californians
drive and the way they power their homes. New targets would force
industries to create more renewable energy, make more vehicles
that don't burn gasoline and further slash greenhouse gas
emissions.

Study Links Proximity To Fracking Sites With Low Birth Weight.
Pregnant women who live close to fracking sites are more likely
to have babies with lower birth weights, according to a study
conducted by the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of
Public Health. Researchers used public records to cross-reference
the proximity of gas wells to health information for 15,451
newborns in Washington, Westmoreland and Butler counties born
between 2007 and 2010.

A carbon price would benefit more than just the climate. The
United States is grappling with serious economic and
environmental challenges – from sluggish economic growth to
rising greenhouse gas emissions and escalating impacts of climate
change. Policymakers have traditionally addressed these
challenges separately, but there’s one policy that can address
them together: a carbon price.

IKEA Pledges 1 Billion Euros to Help Slow Climate Change. IKEA,
the world's biggest furniture retailer, plans to spend 1 billion
euros ($1.13 billion) on renewable energy and steps to help poor
nations cope with climate change, the latest example of firms
upstaging governments in efforts to slow warming. Chief Executive
Peter Agnefjall said the measures would "absolutely not" push up
prices at the Swedish group's stores. The investments will be
"good for customers, good for the climate and good for IKEA too,"
he told Reuters.

DROUGHT

CALIFORNIA: Drought begins to kill redwoods and other iconic
trees while state's forest fire risk rises. Along California's
central coast near the beach city of Cambria stands a swath of
Monterey pine trees, one of three groupings of the native trees
left in the world. The site has been protected for years from
tree cutting because of its rarity. Now, in the fourth year of
the Golden State's drought, those trees that cover nearly 15
square acres are as much as 90 percent dead, their needles turned
from green to grayish-white.

Electric car sales on course for record year. Sales of
low-emission cars are continuing their rapid acceleration, with
industry figures showing four times as many vehicles were
registered in the first five months of 2015 than the same period
last year. The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT)
records 11,842 ultra-low emission vehicles (ULEVs) registered
between January and May, up from 2,838 a year ago. 2014 went on
to be a record year for electric car sales, with registrations
quadrupling to almost 14,500 and purchases of all alternatively
fuelled vehicles (AFVs) topping 51,000.

Lower-Cost LEDs Offer Some Competition to Compact Fluorescent
Lights. For years, lighting manufacturers have labored to make
LED lights mimic the warm feel of incandescent bulbs. But what
they offered in features and quality, they could not match in
price. As a result, many consumers and businesses looking for
efficiency and lower cost opted for compact fluorescent lights,
even if the light quality was often seen as worse.

Food Trucks Go Solar. With more and more Americans turning to the
food truck industry for a quick, cheap meal and sometimes even a
gourmet meal, emissions from these gas guzzling machines is
becoming a fairly significant factor. So the question is, how can
the U.S. make a move to keep and expand on our well-loved food
trucks, while cutting their environmental impact?

OPINION

To lead on climate change, California must also lead on poverty
reduction: Guest commentary. California is adding leadership in
the fight against global climate change to its worldwide resume.
As historic drought ravages the state, that seems like a rational
and righteous priority. The centerpiece of that effort is AB 32,
the 2006 state law that set the goal of reducing the state’s
carbon emissions to 1990 levels by 2020.

It's not just California's drought, it's America's. After a week
on horseback helping my rancher friends with their annual cattle
roundup, I boarded Amtrak’s Empire Builder in Havre, Mont., on
Sunday and looked forward to resting my sore muscles for the 18
hours it would take to reach the coast. As I settled into my
sleeping compartment, the friendly porter handed me a
complimentary bottle of water. It did not take long to notice
where that water had come from: California.
