The project was unique in that extensive surveying took place before and after the light rail line opened. The research provides valuable insights into programs promoting reduction of vehicle emissions and land-use policies related to SB 375, a law that supports more walkable, livable communities and improved transit options. WHEN: 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 22 (NOTE: the seminar will also be webcast and archived; for viewing information, visit http://www.calepa.ca.gov/broadcast/ ) WHERE: Byron Sher Auditorium, CalEPA building, 1001 I Street (10th & I), Sacramento WHO: Douglas Houston, Ph.D., Planning, Policy, and Design; Urban and Regional Planning, University of California, Irvine; and Marlon Boarnet, Ph.D., Price School of Public Policy, University of Southern California. WHAT: The project analyzed the impact of the “Expo” light rail transit line which began service in South Los Angeles in 2012, on the travel and activity patterns of both long-term residents and those who moved to the area after service began. FINDINGS: Among the findings, researchers discovered that the amount of driving was reduced for long-term residents near the new Expo line. California is in a drought emergency.
