Wednesday, July 22, 2015 10:30 a.m., PDT (WEBCAST) Byron Sher Auditorium, 2nd Floor, Cal/EPA Building 1001 I Street, Sacramento, California Available research cannot definitively demonstrate causal association between new transit service and travel behavior change, but there is a pressing need to estimate the potential magnitude of the causal effects of transit investments in ways that are policy-relevant. This research project innovates by applying an experimental - control group research design to study a new light rail transit service in Los Angeles, California. Only two previous studies use an experimental design to assess the impacts of light rail transit, and this study is the first to use an experimental design to measure impacts on vehicle miles traveled--a key determinant of greenhouse gas emissions from the transport sector. We administered a seven-day travel study to a panel of households in the vicinity of Los Angeles' Expo light rail line before the 2012 start of rail service and twice after the line opened.
