world governments are supposed to adopt a landmark deal to fight
global warming. The climate pact envisioned for Paris in December
will be a crucial test for the diplomatic process, which failed
to deliver a strong deal six years ago in Copenhagen.

Climate change: 2015 will be the hottest year on record 'by a
mile', experts say Exclusive: Findings make a nonsense of claims
of a 'pause' in global warming
Climate scientists are predicting that 2015 will be the hottest
year on record “by a mile”, with the increase in worldwide
average temperatures dramatically undermining the idea that
global warming has stopped – as some climate-change sceptics
claim.

How will climate change affect your livelihood? As the reality of
global warming starts to hit home, people may ask: "How will it
affect my livelihood?" Well, that depends. On your profession,
your age, and exactly where you live, among other things.

anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, the most destructive hurricane
in U.S. history. As bad as the storm was, though, it wasn’t the
worst storm that could have possibly hit New Orleans.

AIR POLLUTION

Rough fire can take your breath away
Forget about natural splendors at Cedar Grove in rugged Kings
Canyon National Park. The stifling air last week was more like
Beijing in January than a Sierra vacation spot in August.
Temporary air monitors at times showed soot from the Rough fire
had turned the air “hazardous” – a federal pollution category
only occasionally triggered even in California, home of the
nation’s worst air.

Breathing Boston air is like smoking 5 cigarettes a year

over the years. Smokers have been pushed out of bars and
restaurants, ushered 25-feet away from doors, and even banned
from Boston Common.

Manure for some, dollars for others
Not far from the Amish farms of Central Pennsylvania, in the
rolling hills southwest of coal mining country, Dennis Brubaker
raises 30,000 pigs a year for slaughter. In four enclosed barns,
the hogs gain two pounds a day away from predators. That is,
until they are shipped away to be processed for supermarkets.

California’s Plug-In Vehicle Rebate Program Imposes New Income

Even though financial incentives have helped in wooing consumers
toward electric and hybrid vehicles, California is implementing
its first-ever income cap for electric vehicle buyers receiving
rebates. The state’s move, however, should not be a major setback
in the further penetration of EVs into the state’s car market.

OPINIONS

Clearing the air in the fight over climate change
The oil industry is spending millions of dollars in a massive
statewide campaign hoping to scare you into thinking California
is going to take away your car and get you to tell your
legislator to oppose Senate Bill 350.

SB350 is déjà vu all over again
Nine years ago, the Democratic liberal majorities in the state
Legislature passed Assembly Bill 32, the Global Warming Solutions
Act of 2006, which was signed into law by Governor
Schwarzenegger. The cornerstone of AB32 was the admirable goal of
reducing statewide greenhouse-gas emissions to 1990 levels by
2020. http://www.ocregister.com/common/archives/?catID=0

Support continued efforts to protect climate
This summer, we’ve been hearing a lot about climate change. In
July, the Pope reminded us that preserving the climate is a moral
issue with outsized impact on the world’s most vulnerable
populations. In August, President Obama unveiled the federal
Clean Energy Plan, calling on us all to do better in reducing our
greenhouse gas emissions. Here in Napa, the historic drought and
punishing fire season have reminded us all what a hotter, drier
climate could look like.

Far-reaching climate bills warrant approval
Forgive us if we’ve become jaded about oil industry claims that
California as we know it will collapse if the Legislature
approves bills aimed at further curbing emissions of greenhouse
gas. Time and again, the state and the industry have survived
efforts to address the all-too-real prospect of global warming.

Air pollution at home could lower kids’ GPAs

pollution, maybe listen to her.

Going green gets lost over cost
It’s funny, in an ironic and ultimately head-shaking way, how
John Q. Public reacts to efforts to “go green” or “combat climate
change.” Poll any group of Americans, and no doubt, you’ll find
healthy majorities ready, willing and able to back all sorts of
“green initiatives” such as using more “renewable energy sources”
to generate electricity or cutting petroleum consumption.
