AIR POLLUTION

Lawsuit says new L.A. streets plan creates more air pollution,
not less. A Westside-based nonprofit group went to court
Wednesday to overturn Los Angeles' sweeping new 20-year
transportation plan, saying officials failed to properly examine
its effects on public safety, air pollution and other aspects of
city life.

Fires in West Have Residents Gasping on the Soot Left Behind. The
air in the San Joaquin Valley hangs thick with gray-brown dust, a
result of the state’s largest fire, which has burned through more
than 160 square miles in the nearby hills. The fire has so far
spared lives and homes. But it has exposed one of the obscured
effects that four years of record drought has unleashed here:
dangerous drops in air quality…

OPINIONS

Weak climate deal would harm new global goals: Robinson. A new
set of U.N. development goals, due to be adopted later this

safe limit of global warming, top human rights advocate and U.N.
envoy Mary Robinson said.

Updated: California climate bills merit support. State Sen. Fran
Pavley, D-Calabasas, addresses the Senate at the Capitol in

California’s — and Gov. Jerry Brown’s — leadership on slowing
climate change remain in limbo.

Further deep emissions cuts would stifle housing. One reason
housing costs so much in California is that building new
dwellings is so expensive – and abuses of the California
Environmental Quality Act contribute to those costs. Such abuses
could become even more widespread if Senate Bill 32, by state
Sen. Fran Pavley, D-Calabasas, is passed in its current form by
the Legislature.

Next Steps in the Climate Change Policy Debate. Yesterday saw a
strategic retreat by Governor Brown and legislative leaders on
climate change policy. While disappointing to leaders who want to

mechanisms to achieve climate and energy goals. Like most
Californians, I believe our elected leaders should take sensible
actions to address global warming.
