Netherlands Eyes Firmer Carbon Market in Call Welcomed by Canete.
The Dutch presidency of the European Union is seeking political
support from member states to enshrine in a carbon market reform
a flexibility provision that would enable strengthening the
world’s biggest cap-and-trade program. The plan would pave the

AIR POLLUTION

EU needs significant fall in road pollution to meet targets.
European Union greenhouse gas emissions fell in 2014 to their
lowest level since 1990, although the bloc said more diesel
vehicles had increased carbon dioxide on its roads and
significant cuts were needed. The European Environment Agency
(EEA) said on Tuesday that 2014's 4.1 percent decline…

Higher temperatures = more ozone. On top of the triple-digit
heat, Southern California also is getting slammed with
unhealthful levels of smog. Levels of lung-irritating ozone
pollution rise in hot, stagnant weather as it cooks up urban
pollutants. Specifically, volatile organic compounds, such as
industrial solvents, react with nitrogen dioxides from burning
fuel, to create the unstable gas.

Spare the Air smog alert called for Tuesday. Air quality is
forecast to be unhealthy on Tuesday, with a ridge of high
pressure leading to inland temperatures in the upper 90s, sunny
skies and light winds. These conditions combined with motor
vehicle exhaust from traffic will generate unhealthy ozone
accumulation in the region, according to the Bay Area Air Quality
Management District. This is the fourth warm weather Spare the
Air alert of the year.

CLIMATE CHANGE

U.S. contest challenges video-game makers to battle climate
change. Video-game developers are competing this week in a
contest that will reward games that combat neither mortal enemies
nor monsters but climate change. Four finalists have made it to
the last round of the Games for Change Climate Challenge, the
winner of which will take home $10,000 on Friday.

Carbon could rise without tighter limits after 2030 – EIA. Carbon
emissions from the power sector could stop declining or rise
after 2030 if caps are not tightened past the end of the Clean
Power Plan, according to new analysis from the U.S. Energy
Information Administration. According to several different
scenarios of how states could implement the greenhouse gas
regulation…

Sour grapes: Vintners confront economic challenges of warming.
What if a bottle of pinot noir wine from Oregon no longer tasted
quite like it was grown in the cool Willamette Valley? Or if a
Riesling from Germany's Mosel Valley tasted a little more like it
was grown in warmer Austria? Those are the questions confronting
winemakers worldwide as they figure out…

HEAT WAVE

Record-setting heat wave leads to blackouts in L.A. Thousands of
Los Angeles residents lost power Monday as scorching temperatures
kept people inside while running fans and air conditioners that
strained the power grid, officials said. As of 9:30 p.m., about
6,200 Department of Water and Power customers lost electrical
service, department spokeswoman Christy Holland said.

The science behind this crazy heat wave. The sidewalks are
scalding. The sun is blinding. It’s over 100 degrees across much
of Los Angeles. We’re in the midst of a bona fide heat wave and
it’s only June. What the heck is going on? “Things are definitely
out of whack here,” said Bill Patzert, a climatologist at the Jet
Propulsion Laboratory.

Heat wave raises worries about power outages. Grid holding up so

DROUGHT

Melting snow, water releases and La Niña complicate California’s
drought picture. First, the good news: This winter, much of the
Sierra had a near-average snowpack. Now, the bad news: It has
melted early. Word of the vanishing Sierra snowpack, which
usually helps replenish reservoir levels later in the summer,
arrives amid…

Electric vehicle chargers coming to CA national parks. A new
initiative could make it easier to visit national parks without
hurting the environment. California officials approved $1.5

Vallejo Residents Hopeful But Wary About Proposed Electric Car

GREEN ENERGY

Millennials drive push for expanding renewables. Young power
users are pushing electric utilities to rely more on renewable
energy sources, according to a new survey from the Deloitte
Center for Energy Solutions. Millennials, the age group of
21-34-year-olds, have grown up with a concern for the environment
and a desire to reduce their energy use, the report says.

MIT sets targets for energy storage to aid renewables. Storing
electricity adds value to intermittent renewable energy, and a
new study could help investors figure out where to place their
bets on storage technology development. Lulls in wind and
sunshine present a challenging problem for utilities that need to
deliver stable power.

California’s signature climate policy is struggling through its
awkward teen years. California is known the world over for its
aggressive efforts to tackle climate change, which include, among
other things, a statewide cap-and-trade system. Policy-wise, cap
and trade is a modest piece of the puzzle. It’s responsible for
less than a third of the carbon cuts driven by state policy — the
rest come from an array of regulations, standards, and
investments.

For America’s Clean Energy Future, the Smart Money is on Wind.
Last month, at the wind industry’s largest annual conference,

American Wind Energy Association (AWEA) that “Wind is winning”
the battle to become our energy of choice. As our economy
continues its transformation from dependence on fossil fuels to a

Scorching Hot Southwest Is Climate Change In Action. Scientists
say if we keep burning fossil fuels at the same rate, pretty soon
“what we think of as extreme summer heat” will become “typical.”
Deadly, record-breaking heat and wildfires sweeping across the

work, scientists say. Triple-digit temperatures began scorching
