For developing countries seeking to turn their national climate
action plans into reality, help will soon be at hand in the form

partnership, open to all countries…

California’s greenhouse gas emissions drop, barely. Despite a
surging economy, California’s greenhouse-gas emissions fell in
2014, according to new data from the state. But the paltry size
of the drop — with emissions down less than 1 percent from the
previous year — illustrates just how difficult meeting
California’s ambitious global warming goals may be.

Are California redwood trees the answer to global warming?
California redwoods store more carbon than any other forests in
the world, study finds. California's ancient redwood forests
aren't just majestic and among the oldest living things on Earth
-- a new study finds they are a particularly potent weapon
against global warming.

Court Decision on Climate Plan Jolts Carbon Prices. A temporary
halt to the federal government’s plan to cut electric power plant
emissions has caused carbon prices in the Northeast’s only
cap-and-trade program to plummet, according to the U.S.
Department of Energy. Carbon prices in the Regional Greenhouse
Gas Initiative, or RGGI…

Climate change warming Asian waters, altering monsoon. Each year
as temperatures rise across India, farmers look to the sky and
pray for rain. The all-important monsoon forecast becomes a
national priority, with more than 70 percent of India’s 1.25
billion citizens engaged in agriculture and relying on weather
predictions to decide when they will sow their seeds and harvest
their crops.

Norway bids to capture business by capturing carbon. Others have
tried to overcome the technological and cost challenges, but
failed. The Norwegians are betting it’s doable. A Norwegian prime
minister once compared the difficulty of capturing carbon and
storing it underground to a “moon landing.” But just as the lunar
program transformed the U.S. economy, this technology could do
the same for Norway.

Piles of Dirty Secrets Behind a Model ‘Clean Coal’ Project. A
Mississippi project, a centerpiece of President Obama’s climate
plan, has been plagued by problems that managers tried to
conceal, and by cost overruns and questions of who will pay. The
fortress of steel and concrete towering above the pine forest
here is a first-of-its-kind power plant that was supposed to
prove that “clean coal” was not an oxymoron…

Pershing: Next president 'will have to deal' with climate. U.S.
Special Envoy for Climate Change Jonathan Pershing says that when
his international counterparts ask him how the U.S. election will
affect the Paris Agreement, he talks about what won't change
rather than what could.

U.S. oil reserves larger than those of Saudi Arabia or Russia.
The United States has overtaken industry giants Saudi Arabia and
Russia in recoverable oil reserves, an international study

8 billion barrels more than Russia and 52 billion more than Saudi
Arabia, the dominant member of the Organization of Petroleum

Oil company loses battle over installing gas burner at South L.A.
site. South Los Angeles residents have scored a victory in a
battle with an oil company that drills in their neighborhood,

EVs can weather the slump in gas prices -- at least in Calif. Low
gas prices are no reason for Californians to shun alternatively
fueled vehicles, according to a new analysis from environmental
advocates. The study, released today by Environment California,
compared the electric and gasoline versions of the Chevrolet
Spark, Ford Focus, Kia Soul and Volkswagen Golf. It found that

GREEN ENERGY

Waging America’s Wars Using Renewable Energy. The Pentagon views
going green as long-term strategy. A major player in U.S.
renewable energy happens to be a five-sided building in Virginia
usually associated with deployment of power rather than
consumption of it. The U.S. Department of Defense is the
second-largest buyer of renewable electricity…

Southern California doesn't have the money to buy its way to
clean air. The Southern California agency responsible for
cleaning up the region’s smoggy air has a new strategy to cut
pollution: Hope and plead for money to buy cleaner cars and
trucks. To comply with federal law, the South Coast Air Quality
Management District issued a blueprint last week outlining the

Want to save California agriculture from climate change? It's
time for a carbon tax. To the editor: Your Business section
reports that an important California business, avocados, is being
damaged not only by our years-long drought but most recently by
the record-breaking triple-digit heat wave that arrived
historically early this year. (Re “Record heat shrivels Southland
avocado crop,” Business, June 30)

Before expanding climate law, fix existing problems. Ten years
ago, California adopted Assembly Bill 32 to require greenhouse
gas emissions to be reduced to 1990 levels by 2020, an important
milestone in the fight against climate change. The state Air
Resources Board was granted nearly unlimited power to impose
regulations to achieve the goal, and regulations such as the
low-carbon fuel standard were passed.
