pollution and reduce carbon emissions. The Golden State has
promoted electric cars like no other, not to mention efforts to
boost renewable energy and other technologies that cut emissions.
But a landmark climate bill recently passed by the California

167 Tiny Maps Tell the Major Story of Climate Change. Climate
change just got another telling visual courtesy of the famed
temperature spiral creator. But rather than a graph, it’s a
series of 167 maps. Alone, they each tell the story of whether a
year was mostly hot or mostly cold or mostly average. Together,
they show unequivocally how much our planet has warmed since the
1850s…

DROUGHT

California water guzzlers to face new penalties, possible public
disclosure of names. California's top water guzzlers -- the
people who use tens of thousands of gallons more than their
neighbors to keep lawns bright green during serious droughts --
could soon be hit with higher water bills and their names made
public if the drought continues.

Wildfire fears made real by Southern California's drought dry
brush. Low moisture in chaparral shrubs increases Southern
California wildfire risk and intensity. As the Blue Cut fire
raged out of control in the San Bernardino Mountains one fire
commander described the chaparral brush fueling the blaze as a
kind of living dead. “It was green vegetation, but it burned like
it was dead,”…

sheep very happy. On Golden Valley Farm an hour north of Fresno,
Mario Daccarett's employees milk 500 sheep every day, in rounds
of 12.

Truckers sue EPA over 'job-killing' Calif. equipment rules.
Trucking groups sued U.S. EPA yesterday for approving California
air regulations for forklifts and other off-road equipment,

Fracking denied credit as Obama administration touts 20-year
carbon emissions low. The Obama administration is heralding the
nearly 20-year low in U.S. greenhouse gas emissions as President
Obama prepares to talk climate change in China, but so far the
fracking revolution isn’t getting any credit. White House senior
advisor Brian Deese cheered the falling carbon dioxide levels…

can supply 30 percent of the annual power for the nation's
Eastern grid without reliability concerns, new research from the

Future uncertain over cap-and-trade auctions. On Tuesday, the
California Air Resources Board (CARB) released the latest
quarterly allowance auction results for California’s
cap-and-trade program. While demand rose compared to the
previous auction in May, a majority of allowances still went
unsold due to uncertainty over the program’s future past 2020 –
suggesting policymakers should take action…

China Aims To Kill Off Most Of Its Electric Vehicle Makers. Will
It Work? “The top makes the policy. The bottom takes counter

California’s Cap and Trade Policy is Actually Working Against its
Climate Action Targets. Tying the fate of important climate
actions to the sale of carbon permits has snatched defeat from
the jaws of a broader victory in reducing greenhouse gas
emissions. California’s cap-and-trade scheme is in trouble. The
latest carbon auction announced Aug. 23 failed to sell two-thirds
of the available pollution permits, a third successive flop.

China has a plan for all its electric-car startups; they may not
like it. It has been an official goal of the Chinese government
to encourage the development and sale of plug-in electric cars
for several years now. They are intended not only to help fight
the choking air pollution in many parts of the country, but also
give China's auto industry an edge in future decades.

U.S. universities using less coal for heat, power. U.S. colleges
and universities have burned coal to produce electricity and heat
for 200 years. Now they’re using far less of it. The country’s
educational institutions, pushed by rising hopes to reduce
greenhouse gas emissions, have cut coal consumption by almost
two-thirds over the past eight years, according to a new report
by the U.S. Department of Energy.
