CLIMATE CHANGE

Future climate change field test doesn't make Earth greener. In
the course of a 17-year experiment on more than 1 million plants,
scientists put future global warming to a real world test -
growing California flowers and grasslands with extra heat, carbon
dioxide and nitrogen to mimic a not-so-distant, hotter future.
The results, simulating a post-2050 world, aren't pretty.

OBAMA LEGACY: Quiet but big changes in energy, pollution. Mostly
unnoticed amid the political brawl over climate change, the
United States has undergone a quiet transformation in how and
where it gets its energy during Barack Obama's presidency,
slicing the nation's output of polluting gases that are warming
Earth.

Hailing cooperation, US and China join global climate deal.
Setting aside their cyber and maritime disputes, President Barack
Obama and China's President Xi Jinping on Saturday sealed their
nations' participation in last year's Paris climate change
agreement. They hailed their new era of climate cooperation as
the best chance for saving the planet.

Obama makes progress on climate change, the bright spot in his
China policy. President Obama, often frustrated in his efforts to
contain China’s regional power, advance human rights and open
markets, has settled for progress elsewhere in relations between
the world’s leading economies: tackling climate change. In an
announcement Saturday that virtually no one predicted…

Pressure grows on UK to ratify Paris climate change deal.
Pressure is growing on the UK government to ratify the Paris
climate change deal immediately. A spokesman for the prime
minister told the BBC the UK would ratify "as soon as possible",
but did not suggest a date. But Labour, the Lib Dems, SNP and the
Greens say the UK has lost its long-term leadership on climate
after the US and China jointly ratified the deal at the weekend.
They say there is no good reason for the UK to delay.

N.Y. enviros push incentives to keep renewables in-state.
Renewable energy interests in New York are warning that
Massachusetts and other neighbors could siphon off green
electrons from the Empire State. An aggressive new policy in
Massachusetts has put some of New York's renewable power
generators — mainly hydropower — at risk of exporting energy.

US stocks inch higher on new hope for oil deal. U.S. stocks are
inching higher Tuesday after a number of companies announced
deals after the Labor Day holiday. Energy companies are making
the biggest gains as investors hope for a deal that could limit
oil production and send prices and company profits higher.

a $2.5 billion deal that will expand its footprint in major
energy-producing basins in the West. Houston-based EOG Resources,

U.S. Oil Prices Settle Higher. Unclear whether closer Saudi
Arabia, Russia cooperation might put a floor under crude prices.
Oil prices traded near flat Tuesday on skepticism that major
producers can reach a deal to freeze production, which would
reduce the global oversupply of crude.

California fails to extend green sticker program for plug-in
hybrids. If you have a plug-in electric hybrid car like a Prius
and want a coveted green sticker to drive solo in Bay Area
carpool lanes, the news is not encouraging. The state Legislature
took no action last week on Assembly Bill 1964, which would
extend the driving perk beyond 2019 or allow more green stickers
above the currently capped 85,000 limit.

Toyota, Encana Energy Deal Devolves Into Legal Battle. Deals
pairing an outside investor with an energy producer became a
popular way of financing new wells a few years ago. Energy

Inside solar's secret society. A group of leaders in the solar
industry have been holding secret meetings for the last 14 years,
strategizing how to make solar the dominant source of energy on
Earth. Called the Solar Circle, it is a quiet sort of brain trust
made up of members hand-chosen for their talents and commitment
to the cause (see sidebar).

Mega-wind farm moves forward; will others follow? The largest
planned wind energy project in U.S. history cleared a key hurdle
late last month as Iowa regulators ruled that MidAmerican Energy
Co. could proceed with a $3.6 billion mega-wind farm to be built
over the next three years. The 2,000-megawatt Wind XI project, to
be built at a half-dozen sites across Iowa…

OPINIONS

‘Rolling Coal’ in Diesel Trucks, to Rebel and Provoke. There is a
new menace on America’s roads: diesel truck drivers who soup up
their engines and remove their emissions controls to “roll coal,”
or belch black smoke, at pedestrians, cyclists and unsuspecting
Prius drivers. Sgt. Chris Worthington of the Montrose Police
Department here is out to stop them. “You can hear those trucks
across town, driving like idiots,”…

Let's put priority on our air, and our environment. Yo the
editor: Since most of the “dirty” industries remaining in the Los
Angeles area are located cheek-to-jowl in sections populated by
lower income families, the refusal to incorporate board members
with a higher sense of concern for the environment leaves those
citizens — as usual — very poorly represented on all fronts.

A carbon tax for thee, but not for me. In 2006, the California
Legislature enacted AB 32, which mandated that statewide
greenhouse gas emissions be reduced to 1990 levels by 2020.
California’s cap & trade auction system followed. Last week the
Legislature passed SB 32, which extends and deepens AB 32’s
original mandate, requiring the state to further reduce emissions
to 40% below the 1990 level by 2030.
